It is a very pleasant walk. The view of the natural beauty is breathtaking. The signs for the paths are clear. But if it is snowing, make sure you have your waterproof jacket and snow shoes on. But to my surprise, you could rent snow boots at the information center at the entrance for free.
We bought Economical Tickets from JR Sapporo Station ticket office - Cost 8100 yen return for 2 people which you can use within 3 months - about 50% off the normal return ticket price. Train trip is about 1 hr and 10 minutes. Take the bus from Noboribetsu station to Hell Valley (bus stop number 11). Only a short 10 minutes walk will take you there. Postcard perfect landscape. Sulphur spring water is 80 degrees and you can see the yellow/green deposits in the water. Constant bursts of steam from the ground and sulphur smell make it a once in a lifetime experience.
We reached there and it was pouring heavily. Still we got off our car and walked towards hell valley. It's less than 10 mins walk before we reached. The view is really nice and its a big place to explore.
It is a short walk from most hotels .You will smell sulphur once you get near. The best tourist visit place.
Depending on the time of the year you come here I am sure it will offer very different views. We came here during the winter and it was quite cold. There are lots of hiking trails that takes you to different parts of the landmark. We didn't get too far as it was quite cold and windy. From the tourist map, we could see there are quite a few more interesting spots further inside. Would definitely come back here during more mild weather so we can go explore further in. Definitely a must see if you are in Noboribetsu.
The view in December is breath taking. Snow covered walk paths but steaming hot spring water emanating from, the valley. The track up to the look out of hell valley takes 40 minutes and is worth the walk when you see the crater formed from volcanic eruption. Simply postcard picture scenery.
