I liked the feeling when I went inside - peaceful and harmonious. You can take your time to look at different chapels and corners, and to enjoy quietly to be a part of it.
I enjoyed visiting this cathedral. It is pretty on the inside and the outside. I especially enjoyed the art depicting the stations of the cross. The gift shop was cool.
Beautiful baroque cathedral, an icon in Guatemala city and it's filled with history. It's well worth a visit! Located in the center of the city overlooking the Parque Central or central square and next to the Palacio Nacional. The church was started int 1882 and finished in 1815. The towers where added to the church in 1867 and the church was badly damaged by the eartquakes of 1917 and 1976 but has been completely restored. The interior structure is huge and very impressive.
This cathedral is beautiful inside out.Sunday mass is 10 a.m. They even distributed print-outs of the readings and gospel before mass.
Do not go on Sunday morning during services. You may get scolded by the priest. The interior is very beautiful by Central American standards.
Very nice and big church with lot of places for travellers prayers in the sacrified place on central park of Guatemala City. From cathedral You can see mountains around the city... nice minutes there...
Many Roman Catholic cathedrals in Latin America are large, ornate, and well-kept. This one in the center of Guatemala City is no exception.
Very beautiful building and well kept. I enjoy visiting Churches when I travel and this one is up there with the best.
The cathedral is in the process of being renovated. Directly outside the cathedral are three kiosks that sell religious articles. I had the chance to visit the kiosk run by Sra. Bertaliza Sanchez the only kiosk by itself. Sra. Sanchez is marvelous. She will assist you with patience and give you a reasonable price for all of her merchandise. I purchased various items from her and was treated wonderfully. I highly recommend all visitors to Guatemala City to stop in and patronize Dona Bertalizas stand. Please help support her and you will get the best service in Guatemala City!!!
Visited the Cathedral on Palm Sunday and it was a hive of activity with a large and impressive procession outside.Devout atmosphere in the Cathedral
The cathedral is impressive from outside. Inside it is very light, and doesn´t show the typical (in Latin America) overwhelming images of saints. The columns between the metal fences outside show the names of missing, victims etc of the civil war.
It is a nice cathedral, located at the center of Guatemala city, as all the colonial cities, they have the main plaza at front and the most important building around it.
My brother says one cathedral looks like another, and to some degree he is correct. BUT when visiting historical cities one must visit historical sites which also includes churches and cathedrals. Not necessarily from a religious perspective but architecture, art and the realization that the past lives through these structures. That's what I felt about the Guatemala Metropolitan Cathedral. Though there was a small service in progress and I explored in a respectful manner, i felt welcomed and the sounds and smells only enhanced the beauty of the moment. Actually it is not that large but situated on Constitutional Plaza with many vendors outside as well as children playing added to the reality and importance of the cathedral and in the lives of the people who are proud of their heritage. It's a must if you are in Guatemala City.
Very nice, spanish style with colonial barroque features. The inside has some works of art, and wooden features.
Got out of our taxi on the main square last week, to kill some time before catching an overnight bus to Flores/Tikal. Were instantly in the middle of a gun battle! Therefore, as the square and Cathedral are only marginally interesting, (check out the square in Antigua, or Cusco, Peru, or Bogota but skip this one!) I would avoid Guatemala City entirely. We were in the city for 4 hours and had three (yes, three) "exciting" moments. Fly to Flores.
