macahambus hill cave

Stopped by here on the way to white water rafting. Great view and the guides were well-informed about what happened that made this site historical.

Small cave but the view after is very nice. You will see the path below where people will pass through if they did river rafting. Nature is viewed best at the deck at the end of the cave.

Macahambus is derived from the word ambush. The cave was the guerillas’ hiding place during the 20th century American war led by Apolimario Velez. It’s considered a dead cave since there are hardly any more stalagmites & stalactites rock formations. It’s also home to a meager number of fruit bats. It’s a short 57-meter cave and towards the end is a viewing deck. It is overlooking the Cagayan river, the river route for water rafting. No fee. Outside of the main entrance is a makeshift souvenir shop. There is also a tour guide who generously gives information about the cave and he offers himself to take your pictures. There is no specific rate for his services.This would have been a good trip if the Gorge is still there. There are at least 2 sites you could visit in just one trip. There are also some fruit stalls along the way. The fruits are fresh & cheap. Taxi will cost you around $12 round trip. Bus or jeepneys can be a struggle & will likely delay. On your way back you could get off at SM.

There isn't too much to this place. It has a bit of interesting history as it was used in the war against America. It's a pass-through cave and after maybe 3 minutes of navigating you pass through to the other side which opens up onto a created balcony high above the river below. There is also one side area that dead ends but is also interesting. This area at least gives a bit more of a sense of adventure since it is a bit less travelled. You can find bats huddled on the ceiling and perhaps some other interesting animals and bugs if you interested in such things. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty even though most likely you won't get them dirty. Locals might be hanging out by the opening or across the street. In my opinion, you can ignore their requests to guide you through the tour. Make sure you bring a flashlight, though if there are people manning the booth across the street you can borrow/rent one from them. It's maybe a 15 minute drive south on the main road past SM Cagayan de Oro. Once there you will likely spend 30 minutes to an hour if you are really into it.

located just along the way to the old airport, this cave is a must seen site while in Cagayan. Short walk, sense of loneliness I like for a cave without going 100 Km to get it, and at the end of the cave, is a breathtaking view of the Cagayan de Oro River.

An interesting walk through cave to visit. It would be nice if they would post more about the history which happened here, but it can be found online. This cave is located about 3k past the old airport. Once you get through the cave there is a nice view of the river. No entrance fee, but you can pay a nominal tip for a guide and flashlight at the stand selling touristy items. A previous review mentions the trash and graffiti, but it appears they have cleaned the place up because I did not notice either now. It is a nice visit and I think kids would especially enjoy it!

If only they took better care of the cave and made sure that the vandals did not deface the walls with so much graffiti. And then there is trash - so much of it. what a shame.

We really were not expecting much when we went to this cave. It was just along the way so we thought, why not? The cave is just 57 meters deep but, according to the marker outside, it possesses a rightful place in Philippine history, having been the last stronghold of Filipino soldiers during the Philippines-USA war in the early 1900s. The cave ends with a very good view of the Cagayan de Oro River. There, the sound of water flowing and the wind blowing is truly very invigorating. Rent a flashlight for only P20 before you enter. You won't spend more than thirty minutes when you go here so it's actually a worthwhile stop

Everytime I go white water rafting in CDO,our guide always told us about the cave.so one day I got curious and asked our driver if we can drop by quickly in the cave on our way back to CDO from Midway Beach Resort for my water sports activity. The cave is small and short so it only takes a few minutes to go through the cave but it is rich in history.It's like a tunnel.No entrance fee but we have to rent a flashlight for Ph20.00 and a tip to the guide. no bats either.at the end of the cave, is a breathtaking view of the Cagayan de Oro River. Outside the cave is a small souvenir shop.

Hubby and I just took some pictures outside the cave. We slightly walk about 30 steps to see what's inside the cave and we saw nothing :) because it's very dark inside.No entrance fee. Outside the cave you can buy souvenirs. If your going to Cagayan de Oro River for water rafting definitely your guide will stop here and show you the cave.

The entrance is picturesque and the cave is rich in history. Rented flashlight for 20 pesos from across the street after taking Jeepney there from Cagayan de Oro. It only takes a few minutes to really go through the cave. The exit on the back side of the cave is a nice view of the Cagayan de Oro River. It was our thinking to go to the adventure park that was across from the cave but it is no longer operating so the trip just to see the cave was a little disappointing.

this is where Filipino soldiers fought with the American soldiers in 1940.It is a short cave about 40 meters long which is like a tunnel the end point of which is the breathtaking view of the cagayan de oro river.altho there is a guide, there's no entrance fee, only tip to the guide will do.

The Cave is quite smal no bats cosidering there are many big lizzards. At the end of the cave (about a min walk at most) there is a nice view of the Macahambus Gorge.Previusly there was a zipline here but asfar as i know its not active anny more.There are several nicer caves in the area but if you want to explore them go with a respected organisation like CDOrafting.

doch sehr klein.. Man wandert durch eine kleine Höhle , welche auf einer künstlichen Terasse mit tollem Ausblick auf den Cagayan Fluß endet. Schön, aber ein recht kurzes Vergnügen, die Taschenlampe hätte es eigentlich gar nicht gebraucht..
