Theo and Gloria graciously open their home. Theo shares an in depth knowledge of the hummingbirds. A unique experience to see so many varieties so close.
The experience is taken away due to the host sharing too much. While I appreciate that he is proud of his place and has a passion for birds, he should be cognizant to the fact that not all his visitors are as interested in a presentation about the birds. I'd take a gamble and say most people want to just be surrounded by the birds, ask questions, relax and take home the memory of a peaceful place. However, my experience, and the ones of the dozens of people who have shared with me is always punctuated with.."Yerette is great, BUT...the time spent looking at the birds was too short/the presentation was too long." That said, there should be a selection of experiences. Those who want to just visit; those who want to visit and have refreshments; and the full blown ornitholigical experience.
Thought I was going to see a few Hummingbirds flying around. Instead we were treated to approx. 3000 iridescent fairies of 13 different varieties, zipping: up - down - sideways - backwards, within the mere 100 square fert of someone's front yard. Our hosts were extremely accomodating & while I'm aware Theo has a PhD - I didn't realize he was an ornithologist. This experience is Priceless - one worth treating yourself ( & kids ) to
Theo and Gloria are wonderful hosts! Theo gives an informative and impressive presentation on the hummingbirds history in Trinidad! And Gloria makes you feel right at home with her delicious refreshments! It was a delightful and relaxing day at The home of the hummingbirds!
We spent from 8.30am to 2.30pm with Theo and his gracious wife and enjoyed their hospitality enormously. We saw lovely Hummingbirds and as we were the only visitors that morning we got good photo opportunities, The Ruby Topaz was elusive but the tiny Tufted Croquet had to be my favourite. A lovely place to visit. Theo's stunning photographs are available for purchase.
Went with my family to visit Yrette after reading that it was a top site according to Trip Advisor. Actually, we tried finding the place the day before but got so lost. None of the locals ( not even when we went to the local police station) even knew about this place, so we were expecting it to be an over hyped experience. It wasn't! After calling and booking a tour with them and finally getting the right directions. We were given an unforgettable show. Despite the rain, there were literally hundreds of every kind of hummingbird with the most unbelievable colors! This is not counting the dozens of "banana birds," kisskidees and other colorful visitors, taking advantage of the several dozen feeders strategically placed on the patio and the garden. It was amazing! The host Theo and his wife Gloria were both passionate and very down to earth! His knowledge of his subject and the incredible pictures that he also sells on premises were impressive. I know I'm using a lot of superlatives but I can't say enough about them and this experience!P.S. The most ironic thing about the visit was that just recently the First Lady of China paid them a visit and presented them with a beautiful gift that was prominently on display in their living room. Added to this, there were many European and American visitors present taking pictures yet next to no one locally even knew about this treasure. It really is the Best Kept Secret in Trinidad
Thanks Theo and Gloria for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, great lunch, and lots of info. You truly live in paradise. It was hard to leave such a peaceful spot. (And the ride up was an experience too!)
This place is just awesome, and thats from someone who is quite familiar with humming birds! the owners are delightful, the lunch is fantastic, the drive up to it is stunning, and its got to be one of the best days out you could have, whether you are interested in birds or not. Don't miss!
The hummingbirds in their natural element were simply phenomenal! What a wonderful way to spend a few hours. Theo & Gloria were so welcoming & I learned so much about these beautiful & fascinating creatures. This is definitely an experience that should not be missed on your visit to Trinidad!
As all the other reviews stated - an amazing experienceAs a photographer I believe the sun is in the garden in the morning - we went afternoon and the light wasn't the best to take these wonderful creatures Do watch Theo's slideshow and talk - fantastic photos and his humming bird knowledge is probably unparalleled
If you want to see and learn about hummingbirds this is the palce to go. Theo has studied and photographed humming birds fo years and does a great job of explaining the birds and their ecological role. His photos are terrific and the video is absolutely unique.
I would recommend this not only to bird lovers but anyone who wants to learn more about the history of Trinidad in a different context. Theo was amazing as well as the home made food (a real surprise). Very friendly atmosphere! To the Trinidad government please include more about hummingbirds in your syllabus!
I was in a daze for the first 5mins when I visited Yerette for the first time last year. I went back on 13/12/2014 and the sight was out of my imagination. There were about 75 Humming Birds humming their way around the feeders. Such an awesome feeling to sit and watch. This is truly a must visit on your arrival to Trinidad and Tobago.Tobago.
Apparently one of the best places in the world to see hummingbirds I was certainly very impressed! You'll receive an extremely informative talk from Theo about the Hummingbirds whilst they are literally all around the place!Food was included in the price and the soup was AMAZING! Thanks you Gloria!
Yerette is a "must see" in Trinidad. Visiting the private home and gardens of Theo and Gloria is a unique and lovely experience. The drive through the mountains above St. Joseph is beautiful. There are some twists and turns to get there so be sure to call the number on your reservation form and they will guide you. The atmosphere is very relaxing and being surrounded by hundreds of busy, energetic hummingbirds is surprisingly soothing! Gloria served a lovely tea and Theo taught us all about hummingbirds in an easy and interesting manner. His photographs are amazing. We bought two as a remembrance of our beautiful afternoon.
