A lovely intimate theatre. Fabulous sound. Not too big. Comfortable chairs. Quote a lovely place to take in a show and lots of parking connected behind it.
We attended the Jann Arden concert Mar 6, 2015. I had never been to this theatre and was very impressed. Our seats were comfortable and there was an intimate atmosphere in the theatre. Great location with parking garage right behind the theatre and lots of restaurants within a couple of blocks on Princess St.
Currently in this theatre and can not move an inch within my seat. I have had more leg room in planes then this place. Not worth the money.
Attended a lecture/slide show of Ethan Russell, photographer to some of the great Rock Musicians of the 60s and 70s. No question this talented and humble man had a front row seat/ticket to the events most of us only wish we could have attended. Mr. Russell was interesting and tasteful (no scandals revealed). His slide show was logical but a bit disappointing at times with technical glitches. Not quite up to the standard one would expect for a man of his background. He also had a tendency to mumble, making it a challenge for us to hear him. The price of admission was steep for this presentation (much like his over priced photos for sale in the lobby). Our group of 4 paid close to $200 for the 1 1/2 hour show.
My husband and I went to the grand to see the nutcracker. It was wonderful. The theatre is old but it is charming and provides a decent venue for ballet. The parking garage in the back is very convenient and easily accessible we had no problem finding parking. Also the location is right in the middle of many restaurants and shopping within walking distance. We will definitely be looking for future performances at the grand to attend.
nice location, plenty of covered parking in the rear. large lobby. theatre was clean and comfortable. visited for the Kingston symphony which had a large screen on stage for visuals. acoustics is nice.
The Grand is a beautifully restored theatre with good acoustics. Eric Burdon commented that these are becoming rare and that the community should support it.
The Grand Theatre is an intimate venue for a variety of events hosted in Kingston. We've been there for musicals, plays, the ballet, concerts and stand-up comedians. In all cases, the venue is well suited to bringing in the whole audience.Last night, we were comfortably seated at the right side, a little bit under the balcony, in the second row from the front. These are not expensive seats because they are slightly under the balcony. Luckily for us, the people on the end of the row, in the more expensive seats didn't show up so we were able to move down and experience the price difference! This was a concert of John Williams music from his movie soundtracks. They opened the show with 'Superman' and I wished we had moved down before the intermission to hear it better. It was good, but from where we were sitting, it sounded like The Symphony could use about 10 more brass. The Symphony still did a good job as it clearly is comprised of many talented musicians. The show's tech crew utilized the back wall as a screen to play stills from the movies to coincide with the music, so the listening experience had an added dimension. In the second half, we had moved, and we appreciated the magnificent quality of The KSO even more. Acoustics are so important. We often sit in the back row of the orchestra, favoured because it is near the door. The acoustics are fine when you sit there. We've been in the balcony in the middle - again, the acoustics are great. The caution when buying tickets is to ensure you are not acoustically blocked - by such as the balcony on the side. As a venue overall, it is quite good and worth a visit.
The Grand Theatre offers a wonderful variety of entertainment. This year we are seeing the symphony perform "Music from the Movies" and "The Nutcracker". Good seating options. Parking available in a parking lot behind the the theatre. Wheelchair accessible. Check out their listings for performances. And you can purchase your tickets online. The staff are very helpful. For a date night or family outing, choose the performance that is just right for you.
We recently saw "The Bobby Show" at The Grand. Good show and reasonably priced. The seats in the first balcony are closer together than in the rest of the theatre so beware. We did not know this and reserved there. After being crammed in for the first act we stood at intermission and my husband, who had sat sideways as his legs wouldn't fit, could hardly walk. I am short but my legs were about 5 cm from the seat in front. A volunteer offered to move us and Robert, the manager, insisted on moving us down to the seats kept for just such a problem. Apparently, during the refurbishment of the theatre all seats were rearranged to give more space EXCEPT the ones in the first balcony. Yet all the seats are the same price, including the box seats. Strange!Needless to say, we enjoyed the entertainment more on the main level.
Went to The Grand for the first time last weekend. We seen 'The Producers' and had a good experience. The venue is small enough so every seat offers a good view. We were up in the balcony. Bought the tickets online, no problems. Would definitely recommend seeing a concert there. For under $30 a ticket, it's a great value. We'll be going back!
With the refurbishments complete, the Grand is sparkling. We had a lovely evening, found the seats comfortable and good value.
This is a very nice venue with a (perhaps overly) cozy lobby. Keep in mind, of course, that the main draw is the concert/performace/play and not the venue, but if you find something of interest, the Grand is a good place to enjoy it.
We went to "The Grand" last sat. night to see "Whitehorse" & found it very enjoyable. This time, we had seats in the orchestra section. The seats here had lots of leg room & were very comfortable. The staff are friendly & it was a good show. The last time we were there we were in the upper level -not good- too cramped. The orchestra seating is so much better & allowed us to enjoy the concert. At $32.50 each, it was a good evening out. Thanks.
I have been to the Grand a few times now since the City spent all that money on a major renovation. The venue is great, with the exception of the terrible cramped seating, in all areas except the balconies off to the sides. Even people of average height will find their knees hitting the back of the seat in front, and having to sit with their legs apart, to get anywhere near comfortable. People in the 6ft and over height range will find it downright uncomfortable to sit through a show. Great venue ... just a shame the City didn't make a better job of the seating.
