between the lines winery

Okay for a quick stop between wineries we had on our list during the Niagara Icewine Festival but I wouldn't make a detour.The operation and the retail outlet is very much a small 'boutique' example of wine making. Nice people and we were served a descent icewine but I wasn't impressed with the other wines I tasted.I found the Riesling harsh and the one red I tasted only as good as the better home made wines my friends have 'honored' me with.But they seem to enjoy what they are doing and other reviewers like them. If you are passing by give them a try and form your own opinion.

We hadn't stopped at this winery before and were pleasantly surprised. The winery itself is lovely, and the wine was excellent. We especially enjoyed the Izumi white. The young lady at the tasting bar gave us detailed description and background on all the wines and the winery itself. She also made some wonderful recommendations for winery and restaurant stops.

The owners do the tour and they're young and inspiring guys. Very very cool place and the wine is some of the best in the Niagara Region

Really nice staff got to meet one of the owners which was nice. Got to try 5 generous amounts of wines. The ice wine here was the best I tasted all day in comparison to the others I had at the other vineyards. Would definitely go back to this vineyard.

We enjoyed our tasting at this winery. We settled on a bottle of their Vidal which was delicious!This is very close to the Chalet bed-and-breakfast where we were staying. We loved every bit of this stay.There ice wine is excellent as well!!

Brought visitors from South Carolina on a Niagara wine tour and this was our last stop. By far the smallest of the 6 wineries we visited ... but it was one of our favorites. As a young "start-up" winery, the premises are small but the variety and quality of their wines definitely don't reflect the size of the winery. It's owned by 2 young German brothers ... the vintner being only 26. The staff is knowledgable and friendly. As we were about to leave, we were told they were crushing grapes out back and we were more than welcome to watch. It was such a personal visit. We enjoyed our visit and purchased several of their wines. It's a rare find.

This was our fifth stop on a seven winery self directed tour. Of all the places we stopped, this was one that we had read a lot of good things about and wanted to be sure we made it to. Some times when planning a wine tour you can get overwhelmed by the number of choices and plan to do too much. We were right... this was a worthwhile stop!We had planned on doing a tour of the winery but arrived a little late. Which was all good... it was very busy. We found ourselves a spot at one of the tasting bars and Yannick was walking us through their offerings. As it turns out, he is one of the two brothers that own the winery. And, although he describes himself as the quiet one, he did some great customer service with us. Being the winemaker himself, he knows his stuff. And they have some great wines too... at very reasonable prices. We always purchase at least one of the wines we've tasted at each winery. Here, we had to go with two. We walked away with a 2011 Cabernet Franc and a 2012 Pinot Noir (2012 was a great year for Ontario wines). Both wines came in at just under $16 each... a very good deal!I believe they have 3 different tasting bars (don't quote me on that) and each could be staffed by more that one person. I'm very glad we happened to, unknowingly, get one of the owners to serve us. His knowledge and personality, along with some great wines, made this our favourite stop of the day. Cheers Yannick!

Visiting the smaller wineries like this one is great because we got to meet and chat with the winemakers themselves. Delicious wines, nice atmosphere, worth the stop! Definitely a winery you want to support and enjoy.

I've been wine touring around Niagara several times and this recent find is hands down the best value winery given the quality of wine that they produce. Some of the bigger operations near Niagara-on-the-Lake and St. Catherines will wow you with scenic views of the vineyard or a palazzo of a winery. And quite frankly you will be drowned with sweet wines which are a standard of the region. It is easy to fall for the show at these places. For example one of the huge operations near Niagara-on-the lake labels all of their wines with a grandiose phrase like "Vintner's Superior Private Reserve" when most of the bottles really aren't special. But there are some really fine producers of dry wines and Between the Lines is one of them. For reference, (regardless of price) I think the wines at Tawse and Lailey may have been better. But Between the Lines' wines are practically a steal for the quality. We purchased both their Reserve and Red Barn pinot noir and the Red Barn is nearly as nice as the Reserve for only $15. (The Red Barn pinot has the distinctive pale hue, medium body, and cherry/berry notes that you expect in pinot noir.) The other dry wines are great deals for everyday drinking. In fact I am drinking their 2013 Rose right now and I absolutely hate most rose. When you visit the winery, take care turning onto their driveway because it is a gravel driveway. They have a couple of chairs out in front of the barn where you can sit and have a little snack too and they didn't mind that we had a little picnic when we were there.

My boyfriend and I were doing our own little wine tour through the Niagara region, and happened to take a wrong turn onto regional road 100 (I think that's what it's called). After seeing a sign for Between the Lines and a little "Do we or don't we" discussion, we pulled in to see what this was about. We joined another couple for tasting a selection of their wines, and were very impressed with the savviness of the winemaker in choosing types of grapes that grow well in cool-climate Ontario.They must be doing something well, since I went home with a spicy Gewuerztraminer and my boyfriend picked up a Lemberger red (something he had never heard of and was excited to try!).Definitely stop by if you are in the area, great place, great atmosphere, great wine!

This winery was not on our original plan however it was highly recommended by the hosts at the B&B we stayed at. We did arrive early in the morning and did not get a chance to do a tour however the staff were incredible. We were provided with a full history of the winery itself and how this family run winery is also not available for purchase at the LCBO. After doing a full tasting we decided to purchase the Cabernet Franc and the Gewurztraminer because it was just so good! We also learned that you can purchase their wine online and it will be shipped to you. This truly is a wonderful winery and one we will definitely purchase wine from again!

My husband and I stumbled upon this place some three years ago, when looking for the Fix, chocolate factory that happens to be on the same road, and we've been coming here ever since.We love to stock up on the ice wine and take it down to Brazil where we vacation in the winter. The new, red Ice wine is SUPERB! When in NOTL, give this intimate, friendly, family-run winery a chance; you'll be glad you did.

This winery was on our tour we took in Niagara this past weekend, and it was a very small place compared to the others, but it was outstanding. The two brothers that run it really get involved with the crowd and talk about their wine which is nice to hear it right from the source. The wines we tried were all very good, we ended up buying two bottles. Very sad when they said they didn't sell in the lcbo but they do ship from their website for free when you buy a case ! I would highly recommend the reserve wine or the gwertzaminer.

Wonderful small, family-run winery. Two siblings and their parents make for colorful conversation and a relaxing time. After almost twenty years of visits to the area this has recently become one of our favorite stops. Did I mention the wine is getting better and better and it was good to start!

We stopped by on a whim, and we're so glad that we did. We visited seven wineries, and Between the Lines was one of our favourites and a real highlight on our NOTL wine getaway. It is a very small operation, but we found the quality of the wines, friendly, knowledgeable staff and reasonable prices a real treat to experience. We left with a bottle of a unique dry rose that had been oaked, and plan on going back for more on our next trip. Tastings were generous and $1/ wine. Bottles were priced $13-30. Our tasting was free with our purchase.The day we visited they were busy bottling and let us peek at the process. It was really neat to see the real work that goes into producing great wine.
