The Calgary Stampede is a 10 day event, that starts off with a huge parade. At the Stampede grounds, there are all sorts of events and exhibits, the most interesting is the Indian Village, where there are about 20 inhabited Teepees, and Native dancing. There is a very large stadium, where they have rodeo events, and in the evening, chuckwagon races, a variety show and fireworks. The wagon races are very exciting. There is a midway, farmers exhibit, several beer tents, commercial exhibits, musical entertainment, with big name entertainers, art exhibits, etc.The activities are not restricted to the grounds. Downtown there is an Indian parade every morning, followed by free breakfasts at various chuckwagons. Some of the shopping centres put a morning aside. where they hold a huge do's, with free breakfast, music and dancing. The biggest one is at Chinook Shopping Centre. Many of the businesses in town will decorate their storefronts with a frontier motif. In the industrial area, many of the businesses throw Stampede events. Who and where is a deep secret, but you can find them by driving around. The City parties for ten days, and then it spends 355 days planning for the next one. What's so interesting about this professionally run event, is that it is all run by volunteers - the whole thing.
The Calgary Stampede is one of the best run events you will ever experience. It really is what you make of it. I was there on business and wasn't expecting a lot but came out a lifelong fan. It's a very unique venue with a lot of different rodeo events. By far my favorite event were the Chuckwagon Races. They were something I had no idea even existed and wow what a blast to watch. 4 wagons getting pulled around a course with each one being pulled by 4 horses? Yes please. Then at night Cowboys is the place to be. Live, great music and simply tons of fun. It's something everyone should experience at least once.
Anyone thinking about visiting Calgary for the Stampede should fo it this year. Lots to see and do, LOTS to eat and drink, great for all ages. The best deals for food are right by the main enterance in Weadickville, with seating available and trees for shade it is always more quiet and relaxing, and cooler, than anywhere else on site.
For what it is, it is a really well run venue with some volunteers who have great hearts. Just remember this is a rodeo, an agriculture fair, a midway and a chuck wagon race with a few musical shows thrown in. If you have a problem spending money on rides and food or don't think horses, steers and calves should be used for entertainment ... I don't recommend you go. What will surprise you is the food options as you can get some healthy ones if you look. The sheep dog competition is also fun to watch. Just perusing the breeds of horses and other livestock is interesting. Sometimes you can get some pretty great bands that aren't just country western.
The Calgary Stampede is awesome for absolutely EVERYONE. There are tons of kid-friendly activities such as visiting the stables, the fair, concerts, games, etc. But for the adults there are beer gardens, tons of cool and weird foods, rodeo, shows, etc. I highly recommend visiting this historic event!!!
Very good value. They have alot of venues thatyou can go to for free. It was good weather. Lots of peoplethough and the gaming people were very friendly... The water is expensive though
The best time to visit Calgary is during Stampede - the first week of July. To start off, take in the 2 + hour long parade on Friday morning - it's a parade like no other with bands & floats from all over the world. There are free Stampede Caravan pancake breakfasts all over the city, free entertainment (Native dancing, "western" re-enactments)downtown in Rope Square across from city hall. The gate admission is a little pricey (you can always buy a case of coke from Safeway during July, which will have a free admission coupons for kids and also if you buy Stampede lottery tickets online prior, you will receive a free gate admission). While in the gates, there is the midway - especially fun for teenagers, Superdogs, great trade-show with potential for shopping in the Round-Up Centre. The daily afternoon rodeo and evening chuckwagon races, followed by the Grandstand show and fireworks are great family entertainment - extra $$ on top of admission. Rush seats for the rodeo and chuckwagons are reasonably priced but take an umbrella in case of rain and warmer clothes for the evening show, as the seats aren't covered. If you can afford it, book online ahead - centre, covered seats would be great. There are lockers in the Round-Up Centre to store any stuff you might have. Plan to spend at least one full day on the grounds. Don't forget your cowboy hat - you'll feel left out, without it.
Every single year for as long as I can remember we have gone to the Calgary Stampede.Starting with the parade on the first Friday - and attending the rodeo, midway, grandstand events and everything in between. The parade is absolutely AMAZING - it provides hours of entertainment for people of all ages. The mjdway has every possible ride - something for everyone - guaranteed to out a smile on your face. The variety of food is simply fantastic - it's not typical carnival fare - it's a melting pot of everything you might imagine - the variety is endless. The rodeo is my favourite part. This history of the Stampede revolves around this event. The entertainment value is stellar - it's edge of your seat excitement and thrills. The Chuckwagon races and Grandstand show are also something not to miss - it's truly something everyone should experience.Every summer for 10 days (the first Friday in July and on (unless that Friday is July 1st) the city focuses on The Cakgary Stampede. If you have the opportunity to take it in - don't miss in the opportunity. It will create an everlasting memory with you - that's assured. The experience is a little costly - but it is sure worth the time and money - My guess my family is hooked.
classic calgary event, classic experience. The stampede this year was very organized, clean and had great entertainment.
You must come to Calgary during the stampede. The free pancake breakfasts and shows throughout the city are fun. I enjoy the grounds as well...likely spend most of my time...away...from the midway, because there is so much more to do. The Chuck wagons are worth seeing and I like the grand stand as well. The whole city becomes involved. Checkout flapjack finder..add a couple w'W'S'
The Calgary Stampede has many facets and therefore does not fit into the multiple choice checklist. There are many free events and events vary from highly sophisticated to impromptu. I have attended on numerous occasions and at numerous separate events. This is a festival which engages the whole city. We go usually as a couple or with families.
A MUST - THIS IS CALGARY. if you miss this you will miss one of the most memorable experiences in you life .
We bought tickets for our customers - made for a perfect outing during the summer!Good value for ticket cost.
