I love 90 mile beach! To stand about half way and look both ways and see nothing but beach and dunes and water is incredible. It's great for swimming... or getting pounded by the waves :)Where else can you see locals riding their horses bareback along the beach, kids on their quads pulling other kids along the shallows on boogie boards, surfers, body borders, old, young and everyone in between.Go there now!
Incredible, stunnning, massive, windswept, totally gob-smacking..... it's a must see.......we will never, ever forget our trip here. Nature at it's stunning best.
Where else in the world could you drive along a beach? The rules of the road are observed. A four wheel drive is recommended for good reason.
As a passenger on Harrison's bus trip it was fascinating, and as part of the whole, great. On the day we went it was misty, so you could only see part of the "90" mile beach at any time. You wouldn't want to stroll along it, it's one long beach.Glad we went - would I go back? - it's off my bucket list now. But if was a local I'd Fush off it and dune surf as often as possible.
great day out exploring Cape Reinga and the beach. Good value trip but dreadful included lunch. Take your own food!
There is a sandy beach for as far as you can see. You won't find crowded beaches here. The kids liked to play in the rock pools and found some interesting critters. You have to be mindful of the waves as some can be "aggressive". Bring a small surf board in order to float on the waves. Lots of fun. The beach here is considered a highway so you will see cars driving by. I didn't like that.
We parked overnight at the closest motorhome park which is a five minute walk to the beach. We walked for miles! Saw no one and happily were early enough to have avoided the tour buses.
We visited 3 sections of the 90 mile beach from the south (Kaitaia) the middle (just south of Pukenui) and further north. It was suggested we should collect tuatua shellfish. Tuatua are similar to elongated pipis. They are found just below the sand in shallow water at low tide. In Northland, the bag limit is 150 shellfish per person, with no size limit. The 90 mile beach near Pukenui had tuatua shellfish almost side by side. My partner collected almost her bag limit in 15 minutes, discarding the smaller ones. We ate a few raw, the rest as tuatua fritters. We visited the 90 Mile Beach over a couple of days. Winds were easterlies, but the large swell and lack of sandbanks or points meant the surf was not suitable for surfing or swimming.Needed to be wary of buses and 4wds, as the traffic often travels substantially faster than 30 Km/hr.........some may be driving at 100 Km/hr. You would not sunbake on the edge of a freeway, or let your children walk across a freeway to reach a beach.
Wow how many Beaches can you drive along, stop and collect sea food (shell fish called Pipi's or fish for snapper ) we often come to this stretch of coast line and spend the day fishing and swimming it is just awesome. You do have to be aware of other people driving and fishing as it is very popular with locals and visitors to our area, also road rules apply on this beach. You can start at Waipapakauri and drive right up the beach to Tepaki stream then back on to state highway 1 north and carry on up to the cape. This beach is a must to visit it is a beautiful piece of New Zealand go on take a trip up Ninety mile beach you will love it
The hard, compact sand makes it easy to take your vehicle out for a drive on the sand. Just be careful, because most rental car agreements don't cover anything that happens while driving on the sand. We followed the beach for a ways until we found a nice spot away from other people to sit and have a picnic. Very Memorable!
This was one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand. We had a wonderfully sunny day, a marvellous guide and I have now reached one of the top destinations on my bucket list!
