Well worth the trip from Hobart on the Tasman Peninsula, about 1 hour 20 minutes (from Hobart), hardly anyone there, take a picnic. There are toilet facilities on site, no shops or staff, totally different from Port Arthur, very peaceful, we only saw a couple of people there, lots of rabbits though. We ran out of time so only got to see a small part of it, lots of walking trails. Make a day trip of it. It was the site of the first Coal mine in Tasmania and a place where the worst convicts were kept.

Don't miss this side trip while in the region. Lovely little beach here too and the ruins are easily accessible for young and old.

Having visited years ago, I was disappointed to find so much now quite a walk from the car park, not good for older less nimble folks. Lots to read about on plaques etc.

A great place to view and explore a convict place without the hype or cash registers. Chance to discover the ruins in the natural surrounds and this place is really is a day visit in its own right. No entry fee and open all hours.
