This is mother nature at her best. An amazing place to visit, the road is pathed all the way, BBQ, toilets, covered tables make for a good place to picnic. The track into the Sawn Rocks is just a short 750m is fully sealed making it an easy walk as well as wheelchair or stroller friendly. A must for your Bucket List if you are visiting the Narrabri district.
This amazing rock formation is easy to access and well maintained. The cliff face with its unusual rock columns are fantastic but why call them "sawn" rocks? The answer is down at the base of the cliff. Walk down the steps and look to your left. The fallen rocks have stacked themselves like a big woodpile. A must see when visiting the area.
A short drive from Narrabri, easy to find. Sawn Rocks is a fantastic place to have a picnic lunch or spend the whole day.
Lovely spot for a picnic - short walk into the rocks. Spectacular site when you first come upon the rocks!!
I just thought the kids might enjoy a walk about, and they sounded interesting, but we were all blown away. Forget theme parks, take them to this geological wonder. It's just incredible how these rocks have formed like this, and the kids (5, 8, 10) loved exploring the area around the rocks. The walk is along a path and is easy.
A nice driver on the way north. Plenty of BBQ facilities and nice to see a council investing in its natural attractions.
We stopped here just to pop in and see the dawn rocks but when we arrived found BBQs and an easy path and more to explore than we thought. You could have at least half a day or a full-day here. Plenty to explore and learn. Our 13&15 year olds were over our trekking around the bushes by this stage so we left early... But we will return!!
Really well worth the effort to detour off the beaten track. Fascinating basalt pipe rock formation. Whoever hauled the materials up here to make the track to Sawn Rocks deserves our thanks! First class amenities. The car park offers a gorgeous view over the valley, as well as covered barbeques and toilets. The path to the rocks about 750 metres is easy and relatively flat. There is a viewing platform and a bench.
Sawn Rocks, located off the Narrabri-Bingara Road about 35kms north east of Narrabri, is part of the Mount Kaputar National Park. Its a short diversion if you are heading north to Moree or a nice place to stop for lunch if you are cutting across from Inverell. The rocks in question are one of Australia's best examples of a formation known as organ-piping, which happens when lava cools and basalt rock is formed which shrinks into these uncanny vertical hexagonal columns. Other classic examples of this type of formation can be found at the Devils Tower in Wyoming (famously used in Speilberg's Close Encounters) and the Giants Causeway near Bushmills on the north east coats of Northern Ireland. The picnic area is well appointed with tables, free bbq's and toilets and leads into a gentle and asphalted easy 650m walk to the Sawn Rocks themselves. The last section is over a metal elevated board walk which gives an excellent view of the formation. The short trip down the original stone staircase, will take you to the base of the formation and the extraordinary site of columns which have fallen from the face and have stacked themselves, as neat as you like, in piles below the talus slope at the foot of the cliff. This is a really interesting place to take kids and have them wonder at nature.
absolutely loved visiting this rock formation, it is very interesting and has a lovely walk and views from the car park. A very easy walk mostly s bitumen walkway with areas of metal , very few steps.
A lovely area to have lunch and read about the area. Then an easy walk to view the rock formation - most enjoyable

This is a spectacular example of columnar jointing in an ancient larva flow, similar to the giants causeway in Northern Ireland.
Went there on the weekend with 2 teenage kids as we stayed overnight in NarrabriCould be described as a piece of natural art, Good spot to take a moment on the trip to chill out and see something different
Well done to the Narrabri Shire. A beautifully maintained tourist attraction with a sealed track to the Sawn Rocks, clean toilets and bbq area. And a spectacular natural rock formation to enjoy.
