I loved it. The best I have seen in whole Australia !! Thanks Ted. Also the woman from the tourist information was very helpful and kind. I will look many times in the book she gave me!
If you're travelling the Savannah Way then a stop at Georgetown to see this mineral collection should be on your list. Entry is by gold coin donation and the collection is beautiful and impressive. Our children (4 & 6) enjoyed it too.
My 8 year old loves crystals, minerals and rocks so it is probably no surprise that we really enjoyed this attraction. The audio visual assist wasn't working on the day we visited, but we still learnt a lot and had a great time looking from room to room, calling out to each other saying "wow! Look at this!"Having the documentary about Ted Elliot in the very first room made it feel very personal. The collection is vast, well presented and a great, low-cost activity on a hot afternoon.
In the interest of full disclosure - I am a Geologist, so looking at pretty rocks scores highly in my books. Nonetheless, this is one stunning collection of mineral specimens from around QLD, Australia and the world. Some of the specimens are spectacular and I am sure that even those not interested in mineralogy would find it interesting and for those there are screens set up with short videos explaining sites, features and processes. The room with UV lightning is a great idea and for price of a gold coin donation it is worth the time.
I recently did some work out this way and this was the highlight of my trip there. Admittedly I am a hydro-geo so I kinda have to like rocks. If, like me you are into crystals and rocks of all types then this is the place for you. Even if you don't think you like them check this place out as there is alot of associated information on Australia and its history which is displayed well throughout. They also have really well priced minerals that you can purchase afterwards. I have been to a lot of these sorts of places and I think this place offers the most reasonably priced minerals of all the places I have ever been too, half the price of those sold at most of these sorts of places.
