Having visited this museum some 30 years ago it was good to see what had happened to it in the meantime. The interactive displays were good
We were completely underwhelmed by the Gold Museum, which was not anything like what we were expecting after spending an enjoyable half day at Sovereign Hill. It had plenty of exhibits, but they were not presented in an interesting way and we walked round in less than 30 minutes.
Wow. I could have spent many hours here. The information blew my away. Very well set out, Easy to learn. Lots to look at and see.
After a day at Sovereign Hill, there is a 20 minute tour of the museum included in the ticket price. To be honest this probably does the museum an injustice because after a day at Sovereign Hill all you really want to do is go home and put your feet up. I have rated the museum average, but perhaps with more time, and perhaps a morning visit, I may have rated it higher. I don't think kids would get much from this museum.
Gold museum is an interesting visit. there is a lot of information to read not sure that younger children would like it but if gold and history interest you a good way to spend half a day
For anyone who wants to get gold fever, this place is a must. the size of the gold finds in this area are a must see. the museum is very well done and you could spend a long time here reading about the impact of finding gold in this region. Very informative. on the day we were there, a few bus loads of visitors were in the museum and in the shop. this made it difficult to look at anything in the shop area as it was just too small for a large group.
This exhibit is informative, well presented and set out, wheelchair accessible, intriguing. Not just gold.... it is a real treasure trove of information and pieces of history, not sure if the real little ones will appreciate it all, but worth a try..
Great value when you book a package and stay at Souvenir Hill. Very interesting information, love the period cloths collection, it would be nice to see some mens cloths that were warn it the 1849.
We visited the morning after a day at Soverign Hill (entry was included in the ticket) and enjoyed the extra information available at the Gold Museum. Definitely worth a visit if you have time.
We loved this museum! There was so much more to see than about gold in Ballarat. Well worth allowing an hour or two to explore. The displays were very well done with so much information at hand.
We found the Gold Museum a very interesting group of exhibits and so much real gold and this museum is well worth spending the time viewing everything it has to offer. All age groups would find something that interests them and a very good part of the history of Ballarat that the goldfields and miners played an early part of the city.
Lots of great displays, very well set out. Unfortunately we went at the end of a long day at Sovereign Hill and as we were quite tired probably didn't appreciate all that it had to offer.
It has a great selection of exhibits and would be enjoyed by many age groups and backgrounds. [I've never seen so much gold (real gold!!) in one place before]. Its treatment of Ballarat's early days and those of its miners were excellent. It was a museum that both intrigued me and treated me with respect.
A very interesting few hours spent at the Gold Museum in Ballerat, Mr Melbourne and well worth time hear followed by the visit to the Mines. Probably better for the older children than with youngsters who would much prefer the Panning for Gold experience.
This was included in our Sovereign Hill trip..so we left it to last. Whilst it was last...it was not least. This museum is brilliantly set up...with heaps to look at. Under cover and air conditioned...it was a great way to end the day. There are decent bathrooms there , as well as a gift store that has a great range.
