Exploring Santa Laura is great fun. I got a big kick out of it when I did it alone. First in daylight and then at night. The day part was easy. I took one of the regular inter-city buses from the Iquique market and got off just short of the access road to Santa Laura. Since I was traveling on foot, I decided that I could take some shortcuts. Up a dune, across a flat and I entered the historic grounds from above and to the right of the main entrance. No one challenged me, there were no fences and no dogs. Once inside, it is only logical that nobody paid me the least attention. Because there were no other visitors and the few staff were presumably taking their lunch break. I could explore the grounds at my own pace. The skeleton of the main building looks very impressive from the ground. But its inside is what makes it so special. Be careful and follow the basic rule - never walk in the middle of any wooden surface. I weigh well over 100 kg. and if you are not much heavier, I guess you should be all right. And do not attempt it if you have fear of heights. Mind you, I am not an adrenaline junky, and a very safety-conscious traveler. After I got the grounds covered to my satisfaction, there and then I decided to return at night. This time I didn´t mind company and bought a place with a tour operator that happened to offer a midnight visit to both the Humberstone facility and Santa Laura. Humberstone at night is a huge delight for kids. We played a game of hide-and-seek on a galactic scale. Everybody, adults including, were shrieking with sheer delight. Though at times the game got real spooky, too. Very entertaining. After that we moved over to Santa Laura. At night it is bathed in the eerie brilliance of several well-placed floodlights. After the tour that kept to the floodlit areas was over, we were offered generous drinks, tasty snacks and groovy music in the club room. When the fun got going and everybody was busy, I borrowed a powerful flashlight that was conveniently left on the hook by the door and penetrated the main ruin for the second time. Exploring it with a narrow flashlight beam was a marvelous experience. I felt like the shadows surrounding me were filled with ghosts. I knew that the place was long dead, but somehow it seemed alive, alert and...watching me.The tour got back to Iquique past 1.am. and the driver delivered everybody to their respective hotels.Final remark: Santa Laura is NOT a place where you let your children roam free. It is NOT a playground attraction. Keep children under supervision and/or control AT ALL TIMES.PS I visited in 2013, but I am reasonably certain that nothing has changed there much in the meantime

Do you know how nitrate was processed in the 19th century? Here you can look at the whole process, in a very well preserved, pine wood, huge structure! It does not have the dwellings of Humberstone. Between Santa Laura and Humberstone you learn everything about the old 'Salitreras'.

no hay visita guiada, por lo que necesariamente debes ir primero a humberstone, allí te darán un mapa descriptivo de ambas ex-salitreras. con eso ya podrás recorrer guiándote con el folleto, sin lugar a dudas un lugar mágico que vale la pena visitar.

Hace 10 años esta salitrera era un paisaje fantasma en el desierto, hoy en dìa està siendo restaurada y puedes apreciar lo que en otras salitreras ya no existe

Es una de las experiencias más marcadas que llevo. Llegamos hasta ese sector baldío de Alto Hospicio a dedo. Descendimos a un costado de la carretera hacia la Salitrera Santa Laura. Un antiguo molino de viento chirriaba mientras intentaba girar en torno a un oxidado eje. Era un paraje desolador; edificios abandonados y cubiertos por el óxido de los años. Los encargados del lugar nos contaban de lo aún más fantasmagórico que se vuelve de noche. El viento del desierto hace mover alguna lata suelta o alguna tabla de las pequeñas habitaciones cruje sin saber por qué. Recorrimos el lugar por una hora aproximadamente con la boca sedienta de líquido. A nuestro alrededor veíamos el cielo de un azul cegador y el horizonte dibujado por el desierto y remolinos que se veían a lo lejos. Volvería claro que sí, con más litros de agua esa próxima vez.

Realmente es imprescindible visitar las salitreras para conocer un poco de la historia de Chile. Se encuentra bien conservada y mantenida, con mucha información para el público. Es como hacer un viaje en el tiempo.

Un pedazo de nuestra historia que aún muestra huellas de la vida dificil de los pampinos. Puedes hacer fotos maravillosas.

Se você foi a Huberstone, Santa Laura pode ser repetitivo mas se você quiser ver mais de uma salitreira esta também vale a pena.

Esta salitrera representa toda la historia de la época de la cúspide del negocio del salitre. Vale la pena visitarlo y ver esta salitrera rodeada de desierto. Posee múltiples edificios industriales del proceso del salitre en mejor estado de conservación que la salitrera Humberstone, sin embargo el pueblo de los trabajadores de esta salitrera ya no existe, a diferencia de Humberstone donde se puede apreciar de mejor forma la vida que llevaban estos trabajadores. Falta más mantención ya que esta bastante rayado, aunque vale la pena de ver

La visité ya que estaba incluida en mi tour, cercana a la salitrera de Humberstone. Presenta mayor cantidad de restos de maquinaria de la salitrera.Un sitio con mucha historia, pero una pena que este todo rayado.

pasamos a la salitrera con un guia... realmente un lugar muy bonito con mucha historia que contar... quizas... falta implementar mejores servicios....

Definitivamente es muy interesante visitar. Nosotras tomamos un Tour que nos llevo a las salitreras, Pica y nos llevo a almorzar por 25 mil P/P. Muy entretenido!

a un cuando se encuentra en ruinas, se puede apreciar bien como era la vida laboral del pampino, sobre todo al momento del calor y como se sacaba el caliche

pequeña muestra de maquinarias usadas para procesar el nitrato.nos hace pensar con cuanto esfuerzo sus trabajadores lograban ganar su sustento.

En la oficina Salitrera Santa Laura, a diferencia de Humberstone, no tiene cobro por entrada, es una construcción imponente, que se ve desde la carretera, si bien el recorrido es menos extenso, se puede apreciar la magnitud de la empresa salitrera en sus años dorados.En la oficina misma, falta más señalización y un poco más de la historia del lugar, se nota que ha habido poco mantenimiento y restauración, después de muchos años en pie le vendría bien un poco más de cuidado.
