Standing tall on a hillside looking out over the sea, hills and Brijuni Islands I can see why this was the hilltop site chosen for the "Sveta Eufemija" or Cathedral of St. Euphemia. From its' humble beginnings through the history of the original small church of St. George, to the first Cathedral started in the 10th century, and the later additions and revisions in 18th century and facade of the 19th century the church has evolved into a beautiful Architectual masterpiece. There are multiple alters including those of St. Euphemia, St. George and St. Francis of Asissi. The burial vault, ceiling frescoes, wall paintings and ornate organ enclosure add to the beauty. On top of the bell tower stands a statue of the patron saint. It is unique in that it revolves with the wind on ball bearings. the cathedral is open on most days from 10-5
The walk up from the Old Town is slightly steep but you will make it. The award is this amazing great church and a stunning view over the landscape and sea.On your way up you walk by a lot of local craftsmen and artist and one back in Old Town again you just sit down at the piazza and enjoy a glass of wine or an ice-cream.
we walked up to the cathedral from the small port of Rovinj just in time to see a tall ship depart into the sunset, the views out to sea are superb and the surrounding areas are abound with some great bars and restaurants. the actual cathedral has some interesting history and its square is a pleasant place to sit and rest after the steep walk through the streets to get there.
Well worth a visit even if you are not a believer. The interior is beautifully decorated and the tomb is interesting,
Don't forget to visit church and tower. It is unique view of Venice if is nice weather. Big recommend to visit.
Its a must visit in Rovinj.Nothing amazing from the inside, the church stands tall on the hillock giving you an unhindered view of the sea in front.
The cathedral itself is lovely, with wonderful views from the terrace outside the main entrance. But below the terrace is an excellent coffee shop, again with great views, and a perfect place to relax with a drink or coffee after climbing up the hill to the cathedral.
Beautiful walk up to the church, I climbed the tower a few ago which was very dodgy, not sure if the staircases have been secured yet as there was a service in the Cathedral when we visited
We didn't spend too much time in the cathedral, but the plaza in front had beautiful views and the bell tower is definitely worth the 20kn. For someone who has some issues with heights the stairs were some of the scariest I've climbed, and flip flops probably weren't the best footwear, but the views at the top were awesome...and there were only two other people up there! It was really cool to see the way the town is situated from above, you can't tell from the ground how many of the houses have gardens, but they make really good use of the little space there is!
Beautiful cathedral. So peaceful and also fantastic. Well worth the climb twice during our stay. The gardens were perfect,
Lovely church and wonderful sunsets from outdoor area, overlooking the beautiful sea. The church was atop the old town which was so breathtaking.
Spectacular setting for a drink at sunset - behind the cathedral on the hill overlooking the bay. Can't comment on the cathedral itself as it was closed but the views from the top of the hill are well worth it.
Definitely make the effort to climb the Bell tower, the views afforded over Rovinj Old Town and the bay are well worth the effort!
Dramatic cathedral, clearly still a key part of the town -we were lucky enough to see/hear the singers for a Croatian choir competition.
Church is on top of the hill and is accessed by very steep, quaint streets. It is interesting to visit - wonderful view from the top.
