I have been to (and reviewed) Sasteria previously, but have recently revisited and had such a wonderful time that I wanted to give another review...Unlike our previous visit, we decided to have a private booking this time. There were also some planets above the horizon and the moon on show. In addition to the starts and nebulae that we saw again, we got to view the rings of Saturn, a view of mars, and some brilliant views of the moon. This was the highlight of the holiday. Filip even hooked my Canon EOS 450D up to the telescope at the end of our visit so that I could get a few photos. If you have a Canon EOS with Live View e-mail to ask if you can get a few pictures.
Our private astronomy session was in the words of one of the children "awesome". It was a really fantastic and mind blowing experience. So special to be able to see all sorts of wonderful things not visible to the naked eye. Filip is really knowledgeable and I loved all his interesting stories, he was also great at answering questions of all kinds. Would highly recommend for a brilliant evening.
We bought a small telescope over a year ago and with one thing and another hadn't got around to using it. On holiday in Crete we booked the 2 hour private session. Filip was marvellous, his English is perfect and he is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Knowing we had a telescope he got one out the same size as ours so we would have a better understanding of how it all worked, the various lenses and so on. We then could compare that with the view from that with the somewhat larger one he uses.On our night we could see Saturn and Mars whilst the moon was amazing especially with the various filters used. Filip could explain the size of the features we were seeing so we could get a better understanding. Then it was off to see various things in deep space. For us it was a very interesting evening and Filip if you read this, now the evenings are darker in the uk we are making use of our telescope. I really would recommend this as something a little different even if you don't have a direct interest in astronomy I don't see how you couldn't have an enjoyable evening under the stars.I didn't find Filip's web site directions to their home that great (not helped by a new road without signs that pretends it isn't open but is). Before leaving the uk I saved maps of the area on my phone and then switched the gps on so I could see where I was (so no phone bills). On that I could locate the village and once there not too hard to find them. There is a quick route and a slow route. The quick route is very steep, blind u bends, often single track. The slow route takes a bit longer but isn't at all scary, your choice. It was a great evening and if in that part of Crete we'd go again.
Always had an interest in astronomy. This was my first chance to look through a telescope for myself. I'm hooked and want to take it up when I get back home. Been coming to Crete for 5 years and this is the best attraction I've been too. This was a fantastic introduction to the universe. Filip & Chantelle are a really friendly couple and Filip's knowledge and enthusiasm are brilliant.
My boyfriend and I thought a private stargazing experience would be interesting. It was amazing and beautiful and awe inspiring.Filip is highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic and friendly.I absolutely recommend this
We visited Sasteria a couple of years ago. We went at the same time as another group of people so we didn't pay as much, but didn't get as much time on each telescope. It was a fun evening and I would do it again. Unfortunately all the planets were low on the horizon at the time so we were unable to look at them, but we did see a range of other things - there may be better times of year to visit to see planets
This was for me the highlight of my holidays in Crete. I am a big lover of the night sky, stars, constellations, nebulae, white dwarves, etc. Filip and Chantal will welcome you on their terrace and with the help of some impressive telescopes and a lot of knowledge and experience, take you on a guided tour of the night sky. I think it is a wonderful opportunity and I am very thankful to Filip for his time with me explaining in as much detail as I could comprehend. This is for all lovers of the night sky, from the ones that work as professionals to the curious novice. ;0) Enjoy!
The place is so romantic and beautiful. I strongly recommend it. We stayed at Mikri Poli hotel so it was very close.
Excellent if you are a true star gazer with a little experience. But for the novice english speaking tourist with an interest in the stars, it is a struggle to understand our Belgian host who delivers too much information and not enough star gazing. It is a privilege to see his deep space telescope and to see the "tiny" images that he creates through his experience and knowledge of the universe. If he had the ability to project the image, it certainly would have been more interesting than squinting through a tiny eyepiece. Definitely take the group tour rather than a private more expensive appointment. A truly unique experience presented by a very knowledgeable and pleasant individual in the lovely setting.
No matter if you are adult or kid you will love this experience..we were family with one 6 year old and visited on 2nd sep'13. The observatory is in the mountain in a small village and we had a 125km road trip to get there. The hosts were very friendly & knowledgeable. we were late by 30mins due to satnav mix up, follow the instructions from Filip/chantel and you will not miss the place.. Once you reach there you will be amazed to see so many stars by your naked eye,..magicNice experience and would definitely go back if we get another chance
