All sunsets are beautiful. Some are over mountain tops ,some in valleys and meadows and some in oceans. This one is in the ocean. Its really nice to look at but nothing exceptional to travel all the way to Oia just to see it. I went and was disappointed. I understand it is a kind of thing to do in Santorini but the area is too crowded.
Beautiful sunset, a must see for travelers in Santorini. I recommend viewing it from the Caldera view, either on top of the castle or near the windmill area.
There is no such thing as bad sunset. It's all great. It is just not that spectacular as I expected.Perhaps overrated. I understand it is a kind of thing to do in Santorini but the area is too crowded for my liking. I have to agree with someone who voted for Florida sunset over Oia.
Eventhough its extremely crowded at Sunset point but the views are amazing. Make sure u come in early enough to hold a spot for pictures
Seems wild to have a review of 'SUNSET' - but here's the deal. The view from Oia is sui generis...one of a kind...and as you are sipping a cocktail from your perch on the edge of the caldera and that giant golden orb slips into the Aegean you will be happy you came.
The sunsets in Oia are a perfect way to end your day or start your evening. We were in Oia for five nights and at the end of the day before a quiet night on our terrace or at the start of our evening before a night on the town we always found ourselves with the crowds watching the sunset. It was cloudy/hazy one night but the other nights it was clear and brilliant. There are two restaurants which offer perfect hilltop views of the sunset from their outside seating or you can go to the Byzantine Castle Ruins and get a great panoramic view. I think Kastro restaurant can get over run very quickly with bus loads of tourists who are driven up from Fira exclusively for the sunset. Pelekanos has more of the town in the foreground. One night we just walked down the path a couple hundred meters and found a large unobstructed open space with plenty of room to spread out and take pictures. It was just a little ways past the old windmill. This is not the path to Amoudi Bay. If you venture down that walkway you may be overwhelmed with the odor of donkey dung. The whole experience is just another reason why Oia is such a magical place.
Just think, you've flown all the way to Santorini.. You visited the island where they believed Atlantis was.. you stand on the edge of the Caldera where once was a massive Volcano which, when it went up, took a massive part of the island with it and made a tidal wave which smashed into Crete and decimated the Minioan cities.. a massive part of history.. You can only reflect on this while watching with many other visitors as the sun sets on this marvellous Island. Oia's view is best during the summer, Thera (Fira) is a better view late/end of season. Boat is another way of viewing the sunset.
Apparently it’s “something else”…. well, for us it was not that special. The sun going down in a haze above the sea… could be nice or maybe special. For us was just nice. What was special is to see the people lined up on all terraces, and Oia is a town in terraces! Thousands of colorfully dressed tourists in a blue and white painted city on a hundered terraces waiting for the sunset. That was absolutely the most interesting show. Not the sunset, but the public watching the show.
This place is known as the world's best sunset and it really lives upto it name. Pls dont miss it. Acutally more than the sunset, its the sunset effect on beautiful Oia town will take your breath away. Post susnet, dont miss walk in the narrlow lanes of Oia and go through beautiful shops along the lanes. Only one tip is to reach the place bit early to book nice view as it get crowded very early. Also, bus service at night is less frequent so either arrange your own vehicle or reach bus station early to catch the bus
We visited Santorini (in Oct 10) & decided to stay in Oia after reading so many reviews that Oia suppose to be the best place for the sunset. Well, it didn't disappoint. We were in Oia for total of 5 days, so each day we decide to experience the sunset from different locations in Oia:-first day, we wondered around and settled in Terpsi n Oia, great food, great drinks & great sunset view-second day we viewed the sunset from our little house I rent thru airbnb, in Oia, and it was beautiful as well.-third day I have reservation for dinner at Fanari restaurant, can I just tell you, the food was AMAZING & the sunset view was MAGICAL. This is one of the tip of Oia where you will get unobstructed view for the sunset. JUST SIMPLY AMAZING. If you can, reserve this hotel/restaurant, you will not be disappointed at all. Pricy, but worth every dollar!-fourth day, we came back to the amazing Fanari....that how much we liked this place!-fifth day, we rent a car, drove around the entire islands, to visit all other spots/beaches (red, white, black beaches) then we time it to get to the Cape Akrotiri for the sunset (this is in Faros, very southern tips of Santorini) Very easy to get to, but you need vehicles (cars or moped) to get here. I have to say, the view here is panoramic, amazingly beautiful, magical & every adjective you can use to describe the gorgeous, iconic sunset in Santorini!!! Get here to view if you can, you can enjoy the view along the way as well...If you decide to view the sunset in Oia, get there early, whatever spots you pick, to beat the traffic, throng of people will rush to look for spots to view, and the steep walkway, steps, narrow paths doesn't help. Give yourself time so you can be relax to enjoy! If you decide to drive/go to Cape Akrotiri (in Faros) get there early too, so you can enjoy the church at the top and climb down to the steps (we did that) and it was awesome. And time yourself right, so you can leave right after, to get back when it still not too dark. The drive from Faros back to Oia can be interesting since there is not a lot of lights along the road with wandering road :)We came across the world to experience this, and it's definitely the #1 thing to do in Santorini. Just pick a location to view and soak in the magical moments!Included are some of photos taken from my Samsung phone of the sunset!
It is just a sunset nothing special about it really but went (multiple times) anyway as it was something to do.Walk down further down the cliff to get away from the crowds.
