Town Hall, Principalmarkt really interesting place to visit in Müenster, Germany. Lots of History to see. Old, but kept in very good condition. Do not miss it.
For Dutch people a must, because this place plays a important role in the forming of the Netherlands. In this room the negotiations and the signing of the Treaty of Münster took place. Nive decorated!
The Peace Hall in the Town hall is very nice but all rebuilt after 1945. In fact...the whole city is rebuilt. The town looks old but is not.
The ticket price is minimal for students and the architecture is astounding. Would definitely go back there!
We felt a bit cheated, buying tickets to access the area behind closed doors. We had expected to explore the building when, in fact, all we had access to was one room. Bit of a let down.
Although the Town Hall (Rathaus) is relatively small and was substantially rebuilt following the destruction of WW2, you must not miss the opportunity to stand in the 'Peace Hall' (Friedensaal - Hall of Peace). For just 2 euros you get to stand in the hall where history was made in 1648 and the Peace of Westphalia discussed and ratified. You stand under the gaze of the 37 portraits of the envoy's who contributed to this process surrounded by the wooden panelling and fixtures of that period which were prudentially put away on the eve of WW2 for safe keeping. For me it is the most significant feature of the city which put the city on the world wide map. This peace established the state of Holland brought an end to the war between the Dutch and the Spainish and the conclusion to a series of conflicts that had ravished Europe for 30 years. It was also politically a treaty that saw the people of a nation separate from their sovereign and so a move towards modern politics. For the goulish there is also a withered hand and a golden cockerel to see. All for 2 euros for which you also get a quality booklet for information and a keepsake. Well worth it!
The town hall, has a museum that I didn't realize I had even walked into. As a student, I only paid €1,50 to go inside and see the old Rathaus and woodwork.
together with its sister City Hall in Osnabrück European history was made here with the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia to end the 30 Years War in 1648
Town hall and the surroundings are build in a very old style. It's really nice to sit on a terras (whis your beer) and look around.
it overlooks the markets and at night it looks just like the pictures you see in the travel brochures
It's the historic centerpiece of Muenster. Somewhat hidden, but really a must see for any visitor.
This hall of peace was the actually place where the European Nobility decided to end the 30 year war....since then it has been the place of peace meetings for the UN and even the Dali Lama. Incredible but you need to find a way to organize a tour since it is closed to the public. Absolutely stunning.
