Access:+ Outside exit of Marienplatz U-Bahn+ Part of public transport system so daily/weekly tickets still apply+ Best gelati place closeby (recommend to get one whilst waiting :) )Recommended if you:+ want views of Stuttgart+ would like to cycle down an epic hill (there are special racks on one end of the carriage especially for bikes)
The best way to explore the city.day and night always on time prices is maybe little bit high but you can buy daily or weekly tickets for single or group use!
The Zacke is easy to find - just take the lift from the Marienplatz U Bahn station and its the tram on a slope at one end of the square. Its an interesting ride and the views of the city are quite good from the tram as it winds its way up. The last 2 stations are at the top and in a residential/retail precinct that doesn't have much tourism to offer but on a nice day it would be a pleasant walk. We didn't get out and just caught the same tram back, as suggested by one of the earlier reviews. As we had a 3 day rail ticket it was included so it was a good rest with good views
Really enjoyable giving great views over the city of the vineyards from the top and some nice shops to visit too
it cost as few as a tram ticket and you go up a the steep hill to degerloch having great views of stuttgart city - its not really worth to exit at the end of the track but you can easily going down on the same train you just came at - a nice chance to get a little rest from walking and do a bit sightseeing
It's not a great journey but you do get a nice view over Stuttgart. If you have the time and you enjoy trains then this is worth a visit. I was delighted by it but I am quite easily amused.
It was a nice ride down hill to Marienplatz to see the beautiful views. We were happy to learn that you are able to take this ride for free as part of the day rail ticket for the rest of your travels.
To understand the topology of Stuttgart and to see Stuttgart's beauty you must do the Zahnradbahn. My favorite is the STANDSEILBAHN, doing a short walk on the RÖSSLEWEG and then go down with the ZAHNRADBAHN. You will love it. Time investment: 3-4 hours. You will have beautiful views on Stuttgart, see how green Stuttgart is and you will have two historic rides, one with an old vehicle and one with a new vehicle.
I visited stuttgart a couple of times and the one thing that caught my attention is how good the metro/tram/street car system is. Always on time, extremely comfortable and a confusing classification of transport is what describes the Rack Railway here. Its part Metro, part Tram and part railway but it certainly well managed and does its job extremely well.Except during the time of Stuttgart Beer fest. !!!!
Since our hotel was right on Marienplatz and since the Zacke cog railway started right from this plaza, we as railway fans couldn’t resist taking a ride, especially since there was no extra charge – the Stuttgart Zacke is part of the normal city transport system! For a Sunday morning there were quite a few passengers of all sorts – mothers with baby carriages, cyclists with their bikes (there’s a special open carriage for the bikes), and a few obvious tourists too like us. Although we’d have taken the tram anyway, the view alone is worth the ride with panoramas of the entire Stuttgart skyline on the way to the last stop. Our only slight disappointment – after eight stations, a bit more than 2 kilometers, and about a quarter of an hour we’d reached the top, which curiously has the word “hole” in the name (“Degerloch”) although it’s actually 200 meters higher than the starting point. At least we had the return trip to enjoy and also another tourist attraction for transport buffs in another part of town to look forward to: the Stuttgart cable car.
Compared to the bigger cog railways in the Alps, this is rather small scale. Its easily accessed from a local metro stop, and you can get off for reasonable views of the city from above - but Stuttgart isnt a city whose views will take your breath away.
Using the three day travel ticket for an exhilarating ride way up above Stuttgart with commanding views. It winds its way along the streets and it may be worth while getting off around half way to get some panoramic photos.
You can catch this cog wheel train right outside of the Degerloch U-Bahn and take the 10-15 minute ride to Marienplatz for some awesome views of the city (sit on the right of the train facing forward for the best views). There are several stops along the way to get out and enjoy the views. Bikes are welcome and there is a bike rack on the front of the train. It would be a strenuous walk back up for exercise.
The roughly 15 min train ride starts from Marienplatz station and ends at Stuttgart-Degerloch giving an incredible view of the Stuttgart city and probably one of the few Rack Railways in the world(Nilgiri Rack and Pinion Mountain Railway in south India is the other that I could think of). The more Higher you go, the more expensive is the houses in the neighborhood and the more majestic is the view.If you happen to have a bike, the train also has a bike rack at the front of the the engine to carry up the hill and enjoy the ride down in your own bike. Also you can get down in the middle of your ride at a place from where you can view the entire city (not able to recollect the name of the station).
Interesting history for this short ride to the terminus. You can get off half-way and look down on the city, impressive. Your VSS ticket covers the ride so I would try it.
