A small museum, but SO unique! Won't take up too much time out of your day in Heidelberg but there is nothing else like this little students prison! Highly recommend a visit! Here's a more in depth blog post I wrote about this site on my regional travel blog: http://hiddeningermany.blogspot.ca/2014/08/studentenkarzer-student-prison.html
This was an interesting insight into student life (and discipline) in the history of Heidelberg University. It is only a few rooms heavy with graffiti from over the years and will not take long to see, but it worthwhile, particularly in conjunction with the university museum (which is included on the same ticket). When you go to the university, make sure that you see the earlier student prison which this one replaced!
Very nice experience. The student jail is the place where those who got rowdy with their drinking and antics were held. Interesting wall art.
I find this place really cool. Students who were kept here with minor offense have graffited the walls with the silhouette of their roomates. This is more like a student dorm than a "prison".
Do not miss it. It takes only 1 hour, very funny nice experience. I will not tell more you must see it yourself.
The sons of the rich were educated at the university in Heidelberg in days gone by. The student jail is the place where those who got rowdy with their drinking and antics were held. Interesting wall art, some over 100 years old, by the students during their time "away". Bathroom facilities to the left of the main entrance, free of the usual 0.5 euro fee.
On weekends you purchase your tickets from the university shop. The jail is located up two flights of stairs and the entire way up is decorated with silhouette, crests, and other little pictures painted by the students. Some of them are over 100 years old and still looking great. The jail itself consists of 3 single rooms, what appears to be a double room, and the "king's throne" (the wc) and all are covered in the students' original artworks.I did enjoy it, it was something a bit different but it felt like there could have been more, not sure what though.
not easy to find and need to walk about 2 mins to reach the student jail after get in the entrance, there is a introduction book in many kinds of language on 3rd floor. although i do not understand german, it was still fun.
This is a really funny thing. When you see it for the first time it just looks amusing but later you actually see it is really good thing that maybe should be practising these days :D worth a visit
Would have been nice if there was more of a background on the jail. The pics on the wall were interesting. Where did they get the paint, etc to make the pics???
We did a tour of the Jail as part of a town guided tour; this is the way to do it as our guide brought it's very amusing history to life!
We really enjoyed this. The student jail was so interesting. It was a little smaller than we expected but really good value for money! Next time we would get the audio guide. There is graffiti and paintings everywhere! Very touching history. The museum attached was great as well. Everything is in German in this part. Great part of our trip!
It's a quick visit, makes you wonder how the students painted even on the ceiling. Leaves you with more questions than answers.
