A city landmark with a beautiful green, where students were eating lunch on a beautiful fall day. Oldest university in Germany. See it on your walk around Old Town.
Oldest Uni in Germany, opened in 1382 , and still teaching generations until, what an amazing campus, and history
We went to the University museum because it was included on the ticket that we had purchased for the Student Prison. Whilst some of the exhibits had no engish, many did, and we found it a really interesting experience, especially the frank and (seemingly) honest account of the university during the Nazi years to the end of the war. A real bonus was the lovely lady who then took us up to the University hall and showed us around it before taking us to the older student prison - she told us some really interesting things about each and was great.
It is a 600 years old university and the university also is Germany's oldest. It's worth to visit when you in the Heidelberg area.
Visiting the oldest university in Germany was a highlight of our trip to Heidelberg for my husband. However, don't expect to see a lot of ancient buildings, as very few survive. Most of the current university was built about 1931, with American funds. The architecture is very traditional, so you wouldn't necessarily guess it's 20th century origins. It was, nonetheless, a very worthwhile visit. We even went into the library and wandered around in it for a bit--very impressive, and seemingly open to the public since we were able to just walk right in.
Walk around the Old University, the oldest university in Germany, with its old buildings, student prison and wonderful library. The visit is a must if you are in Heidelberg, it has been the heart of the city for centuries.
One of the most outstanding places that I ever been! One of the oldest university in Germany an a study/work place of many Nobel Prize awards! You can enter in The Room of the 13th century where generations of scientist was. Unforgettable!!!
Heidelberg is city with lots of universities. This part of town is just amazing. Spot some fine architecture while sitting on a bench.
It was interesting to visit. A few signs were in English - including the ones relating to the history which were helpful. A good background was provided relating to WWII. The Grand Hall was spectacular.
I don't know why but it took me a while to find the building and then to find the entrance to get in. There were 2 ladies in the gift shop, one of which was not very nice as it looked like it was the end of her shift. I walked through the student prison hall in about 5 mins; I guess it would be more interesting if I could read the German writing on the walls. The university museum was nothing exceptional. And somehow I missed the great hall which, judging by the other reviews, is the best part! I saw a sign that said ask staff for help if you want to see the lecture hall. I took this to mean that it was closed to the public and didn't inquire with the unfriendly staff about it.Maybe I was just in a mood where I had had enough of tourist attractions\museums, etc. I wouldn't recommend this to friends. Luckily, the cost was only 2,50 using the Heidelberg Card. Oh, and there was a free bathroom there.
Nice to visit such a representative university specially when we think that 12 noble prizes winners were affiliated to this University. Do not miss the visit to the Lecture Hall, which is impressive. It is usually closed for visits on mondays.
