Great trip on a motorbike, lots of curves and hills and countryside. Gorgeous when you are there.Make sure you have enough petrol, there are few filling stations up there.
The best place to spend times in wild nature. Delicious dishes in trattoria and hospitality people. You can take horses, pony and donkey for trip between hills.
Castelluccio di Norcia and the "Piano Grande" (great plain) around it is a truly wild place. While known for its summertime wildflowers and lentils, we visited in October as autumn was being to set in. If you didn't know better you'd think this plain at an elevation of 4000 ft was a scene straight from an old US Western movie shot in the Sierra Nevada mountains. There are some good places in the town of Castelluccio to have lunch especially if your craving lentil soup made from the famous namesake lentils harvested from the local fields. We found Nonna Derna selling lentils whose children now run her farm....
It is a lovely, scenic drive up the mountain from Norcia, but what a surprise when you finally reach the 'top' and have the enormous panorama open up before you - it takes your breath away.
Amazing place..no words to describe the beauty of this piece of nature. Some 'tornanti' to conquer before you reach the last hill where your breath is taken away when you see the Piano Grande for the first time. Even when you do not visit it during spring it is stunning. You should not miss this one!
This is an amazing breathtaking place! I happened to be there every few days in the past few weeks because I'm a bee-keeper and this year I had the opportunity to bring some bee-hives in the Piano Grande of Castelluccio...well, honey will be certainly good, but the views of the wildflowers is something spectacular to see!I remember in middle June the yellow flowers were the most, then the red poppies and finally a mix with the bluebottles as well. I recommend to visit Castelluccio between end of June and middle July, possibly not during the weekends because there are for sure too many people around.
We spent a wonderful day-trip out of Rome visiting the Piano Grande of the Monti Sibillini National Park and the town of Castelluccio. A few months ago, an Italian friend recommended that I visit Castelluccio during the summer to see the spectacular carpet of wildflowers in the Appenines. Though off the regular tourist path, the drive up to Castelluccio was well-worthwhile. After a truffle-intensive lunch in Norcia, we drove up into the mountains. The drive provides spectacular views over the valley, but nothing could compare with the treat for the eyes that awaits at the top. Mountains, free of trees, encircle a green plain which stretches into stripes of color painted by red poppies, yellow lentil flowers, and blue cornflowers. On the far end of the plain, the tiny town of Castelluccio sits perched above the splendor. We stopped at the edge of the plain to take pictures and a group of horses roaming freely joined us to take in the view. Trails cross the valley and circle the plain, providing lots of great options for hikers and mountain bikers. There are options to also ride horses and to do some paragliding. Just be sure to take your camera if you decide to visit; it is definitely photo-worthy.
We visited here following recommendation of friends. We came from Visso and were warned the fields on the approach were good but wait till after Castellocio to get the full effect. Nothing however can prepare you. The first field were very beautiful with really pretty flowers. The view from the town onto the plain is however magical. Like a rich tapestry. It has to be seen to be believed. The photographs do not do it proper justice.
Without doubt this is one of the most amazing and beautiful places we have been to. Experienced on a lovely circular driving tour from Preci via Norcia and Visso easily completed on a leisurely day with lunch, walking and photo stops. Some fabulous photos on this review already so I will add just one more but nothing compares to cresting the mountain from Norcia and seeing the plain laid out before you - an incredible WOW moment.
Traveling here with a local, I was blown away by the privilege of experiencing this hidden gem. We drove from the coast of le Marche up through the mountains and into grand piano. So many wonderful memories, including the forest in the shape of Italy, herds of sheep and excellent local foods. What a delight to watch groups of people on motor bikes come in, rest, eat, relax and move along. The simple landscape is beautiful and unlike anything I've ever seen. It's easy to forget the altitude of this rich flat landscape while you are there. We stayed for a lingering meal of fresh local meats and cheese in the sun. I will always remember this part of our vacation. Please experience this place.
As a photographer, I was blown away by the beauty of this place. I was not knowledgeable about Norcia before I moved to Italy. But the flowers here are like nothing I have seen before, including the high rockies. And the mountains that surround this great plain are beautiful. I will be coming back for more throughout the years to come.
We drove up from Spoletto, it was a great drive, but my breath was taken away at the first sight of the piano grande. As it was September, there wasn't a great amount of flowers, but a real sense of peace. We took a walk through the plains and enjoyed the silence. Castelluchio isn't really worth stopping for, the tourist info isn't open in September apart from weekends and the bars/cafes are nothing to write home about.
The fleld flowers were late this year due to prolonged rains. Fields of red, yellow, blue and mist in the valleys in the early morning. Spectacular mountains; good hiking and a great restaurant in the vening.
The views are spectacular, the scenery is magical: lentils in full bloom are a sight for sore eyes. Worth the ride!
The most magical alpine meadow full of beautiful wild flowers, nestled between the Sibillini Mountains with a fascinating drainage system.
