The queues for the Vatican were snaking all over the square in the backing July sunshine. If you are planning to visit the Vatican itself, book tickets online or through an agency. Don't just turn up as you'll be queuing for ages. The square itself is picturesque but don't think you can just arrive and enter the Basilica - again, we're talking massive queues with free sunburn. Do visit but be prepared for a long wait. Wear a sun-hat and bring a drink.
A beautiful piazza where you are surrounded by impressive architecture and lots of people. Sit in the sun and soak in the atmosphere. Very clean - lots of people picking up litter etc. Massive queues as there are for all sights but book online - it really does "beat the queues".Be prepared to say a firm NO to the annoying sellers of bus tours, advance tickets and the ubiquitous selfie sticks.
We stopped here as part of an excursion on our worldwind Mediterranean cruise. It was extraordinary, funny how you imagine things to be so much bigger than they actually are. The architecture is amazing, the statues high up on the walls are outstanding. There were long long queues to go inside the Sistine Chapel and with time not being on our side it would have been impossible to see as much as we did if we had joined the ranks. We would definitely go back again allowing more time to see everything.
Enormous, truly impressive. This is a must see. I thank Catholics worldwide for sharing this most special place. The Pope has an apartment that overlooks the square. I pretended he was blessing us all.
There is an obelisk in the middle which everybody sorta gravitates to. Do the same. Bring some bread and cheese and have lunch there. There are a lot of pidgeons and my daughter chased them a good half hour--getting some of the energy out.
That's what we experienced in October. It was hot, the lines were unbelievably long--we're talking hours and hours. The square is cluttered with permanent row upon row of cheap chairs kept there for the Wednesday mass. It's a shame that you can't stroll the flat wide piazza the way it was intended to feel the massiveness of the architecture and spaciousness of the piazza itself. People are kept in cattle call lines zig-zagging around for hours until they get in.... As for the rest, well, it's a great place to grab a taxi and a perhaps be gouged on a horse and buggy ride, but the rest is sleeze. We saw gypsies dressed (poorly at that) as make shift fake nuns looking for handouts... others try and sell cheap tourist wares to you by getting up in your face... the vendors hire hawkers who sell their crap for them all over the square. Vendors fights with each other when crossing over into each other's territory. The sidewalks are pretty filthy. No place to sit. Drinks and refreshments are very expensive here. I don't recall seeing a single water fountain to fill our water bottles. After hours and hours of heat, crowds and shoving during our Vatican Museum and Vatican tour (a private one that was in no way "private") we were just anxious to grab drinks and then a cab back to our rental apartment. Good by St Peters. No need to ever come this way again... perhaps we should have done something else...
Huge square that gives you a great view of St Peter's Basilica and other Vatican buildings. The queue to enter the Basilica stretches all around the perimeter of the square, and took around 3 hours, but worth it. Went on a Sunday, so was able to see mass on large TV screens, then see the square fill up with people before the Pope appeared in a window to speak. Amazing experience.
I've been to St. Peter's Square several times - mostly when entering St. Peter's Basilica, but, I've also sat in the audience (there are chairs for several hundred people near the Pope's stage) and attended mass. I'm not Catholic (or any religion for that matter), but I figured if I was going to receive mass, I'd receive it from the big guy. It's a long day, but, I do recommend it.Otherwise, the Square is a large, open-air area for the tourists, with an ancient Egyptian obelisk at the center. The obelisk was moved to this spot in the 1500s by Pope Sixtus V, and was sanded down to remove the hieroglyphs (such a waste!). The Square was redesigned in the 1600s by none other than Bernini.Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the Square, or spend half a day while listening to mass from the Pope (on most Wednesdays). It's a beautiful place to visit!
A most commanding square with impressive columns in surround! I was very impressed by the number of the believers that made an endless line to go to church to pray! A very special image that you have to see!
Wow is the only word I can use to describe this place. It was amazing, the weather wasn't great the day we went but it was still fantastic. A must see in Rome. If you want tickets for the Vatican museum book online as queues were HUGE!!
Large square full of beautiful architecture. Nice to sit under the arches and watch the ever wandersome vatigan queue go by. Lovely few hours people watching and great photo ops.
Amazing to visit this massive square after seeing it on tv etc over the years.not much more that can be said really.magnificent.
