Built upon the sight of an earlier church destroyed by WW II bombing in 1944, this concrete structure features hundreds of pieces of Baccarat stained-glass crystal set in its walls. Unfortunately, the effect is nothing like what is generally experienced in older cathedrals found throughout Europe. The idea was to be a 1950's modern church but, even on a bright sunny day, there just isn't much light coming into this house of worship. Instead, the atmosphere is rather gloomy, uninviting and very cold, much like being in an above ground concrete bunker. The modernistic stained-glass designs are difficult to interpret. Don't bother paying the 5 euro charge for the multi-lingual informational brochure on sale at the tourist office.
