We took the telepherique to the first level, Gare Peyrou d'Amont, and walked across to the lac du Puy Vachier - some scrambling over rocks and through pockets of snow - and then made our way down to La Grave. The way was sign posted quite well. The highlight was the fantastic wild flowers which changed as we descended. Wonderful at this time of year (mid June).
Tour de La Meije skiing, great tour, good level in mountaineering is a requirement, as well as steep slopes skiing
went up for night in the log cabin at the top! a totally stunning place! loved evry minuite! awesome view, 30+ degrees and on snow! crazy! absolutely stunning views! being the only people up here after the cable car stops is a pretty incredible experience!
Locals say this place is exceptional and it surely feels like it. A very different world from the typical kilometers of groomed slopes you can find in all the generic alpine resorts. It's all about being laid back and enjoying some fine riding in high alpine terrain. The lift is ridiculous - old prototype with quite a low capacity that has to stop every time a cabin gets into either of the stations, so it will take you a long while to get all the way to the 3200m. Sometimes the door won"t even close, but unlike in a "normal" lift the staff will let you deal it with it yourself no stress. The crammed inside of the 5 eggs makes pretty good place for making new friends as well. Once you get to the top you will recognize immediately the myriad of options to make your way down - like unpainted canvas only for you to be creative. Avalanche equipment is a must and if you want to ride down on the glacier harness, rope, prussiks, pulleys etc. are more than desirable. If you want to feel more secure find yourself one of the local guides. The more difficult routes down that will offload you onto the main road in the valley close to the tunnel might also include some abseiling - we went down about 20m but fortunately there was a fixed ring so no drama there. Oh yeah and it will be packed on a weekend with good snow, try to avoid that if you can.
Took the first lift up for a hike around La Meije. The lift was very old, stopped very often leaving the carts bungling at high altitudes and doors would not close completely. My girlfriend almost passed out being that scared...I'll prefer to find my way through Les 2 Alpes next time or just walk up. I'd say, it's time to replace the lift after all those years of duty. Need to say: the view on the mountain is priceless!
La Grave.... say's it all. Every time I hit this mountain I am in awe. Forget the ESF guides and try and hook up with the extreme operators in the village. The lift is a disaster as well as the amenities on the mountain but that's not what you are here for. Go right off the lift and the off piste opportunities are insane. Wide open bowl to chutes to trees. Massive vertical drop!!! Go left and you get a somewhat easier tour that you don't need a guide for. Having a top guide is key since he can bring you to some extreme runs that are right off the lift with little hiking. The first visit I stayed in Serre Chevalier and the next Les 2 Alpes which are both 30+ minutes away by car. There was supposed to be access from Les 2 Alpes by lift but there was too much snow. Both times I had awesome snow and I will say that it was my #1 lift served experience of my 43 years of skiing. Not for the Vail Crowd!!!!
Great views, nice ice sculptures in summer. Trails were good. Refuges had drinks and food for good prices.
