We booked this tour through Expedia . Took the bus from Milan to Tirano, and the Bernina Express from Tirano to St Moritz. It was absolutely beautiful . I was a bit disappointed w the train itself . I was expecting something a little more " old world luxury " but the views made up for it . At every turn everybody was in awe , it's just that magnificent . St Moritz is also a very quaint little town . My only complaint is that w the tour everything felt very rushed . Highly recommend it.
After much research into scenic train journeys to do for my boyfriends birthday I decided to book this trip. We took the regional train from Lecco to Tirano and then joined the Bernina Express at Tirano.Easy to book and not that expensive compared to glacier express. The train had big beautiful windows, and comfy seats. We took this trip at the beginning of March and the trains were not busy at all. We booked second class seats and there seems to be very little difference between first and second class. The journey itself is amazing, lasting around 4 hours. The train climbs up and up through the Alps, crossing beautiful viaducts, snowy landscapes and mountainous peaks. We caught a connecting train at Chur to Zurich, right across on the next platform,.The staff on board were very friendly. We took prosecoo and a picnic with us which seems like a common thing for passengers to do, and the staff don't mind. It really is a special journey and I would urge everyone to do this at least once in their lifetime
I travelled to swiss in the first week of December..... I travelled all the way from Arona to Milan ... to Tirano in the italian trains... Tirano is in the northern part of italy and in the border of swiss... The swiss train station is just in the walkable distance from train italia station in Tirano.... From here the beautiful journey of Bernina express starts through the swiss alps .... I travelled upto St. Moritz and stayed there for a night and was back next day....
While I was living in Chur I had some chances to participate at this touristic train. Its great spending 4 hour on a train with panoramic windows. Refreshments are available and when you reach to Tirano you can enjoy this small İtalian town. The journey takes about 4 hours and you have been informed with speaker about the places passing by. Amazing to see those viaducts and glaciers where no man is walking now.
We took viator tour from Milan in a coach to Tirano Italy n Swiss border. Our bonus stop was a cute little pilgrim church of Madonna Di Tirano. The next 2.5 hours were extraordinary beautiful views any direction we looked. The pretty little villages @ d bottom of the alps look like the ones on Christmas cards. Despite d freezing temp we didnt mind opening the windows of d train to take besutiful pictures. Awesome ride!
We took this tour from Milan (guided coach tour from Milan to Tirano, and then Bernina Express to St Moritz, and Coach back to Milan). The highlight was the Bernina Express as the winter scenery was unbelievable, but the commentary from our guide made the coach tour great as well. We had about 90 minutes in St Moritz - pretty, and very high end ski resort, but would probably go elsewhere for a ski holiday, and an hour in Tirano - not much in Tirano except a really beautiful old church (compares with the best of the churches we saw in Europe)
Travelling from Chur to Tirano was lovely. The most amazing scenery and everything was very picturesque. We would recommend this.
We really enjoyed our trip on the Bernina express. The train is very comfortable and runs smooth and quietly considering it is a train. The staff on board was attentive and gave us helpful information. Audio is included overhead, giving you information on the sights around. The highlight, of course, is exiting the train atop the Bernina Glacier and strolling around.
Travel with the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano was one of the most amazing experiences I ever had in terms of landscape. I was traveling with my mother and auntie and they dont ski, so I thought the best way to have a nice experience with snow was taking the Bernina. And I was right. What we saw was a fairytale landscape besides the other. No words for the experience, the Bernina is just amazing.
My wife and I made a day trip from St. Moritz to Tirano and back in early January. It was amazing and a must 'to do' for anybody in the region. It was winter, so the snow covered mountain added to the spectacular beauty of the alps. The journey took us through many many (some very long). The weather was perfect (clear blue sky) that added to the charm. We had booked on the Panoramic coach (2nd class seats were quite comfortable) which had large windows and offered excellent views. On the way to Tirano, the coach was less occupied and made the photo taking frenzy so much easy. we were awe stuck with the sheer beauty and the engineering marvel of this rail track. We had a 2 hours break at Tirano. although Tirano is in Italy there was no passport check. Unfortunately the town was closed due to some holiday and there was not much to do. We walked around and had lunch at a diner near the railway station (which served good reasonably priced Italian food). As we had taken all the photos on our way in , the return journey was spent on just admiring the natural beauty. The coach was fully packed anyway. I would strongly recommend this trip.
We purchased first class tickets for the trip. We did not see what type of seating second class offered, but the first class seats were comfortable, with ample storage for our luggage. Coffee, tea, wine, and snacks were served. We had already eaten a sufficient breakfast, so we passed on the snacks, but the coffee was welcome. I thought it a bit early, since the train departed at 8:30 am, for wine, but some passengers availed themselves of it. Coffee was sufficient, though. I will note that the cart made only one trip through. If you wanted a second drink or turned them down the first time, you had to go to the snack bar and make a purchase. The Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano is a four-hour trip. It winds its way through the Alps, passing beautiful scenery along the way. The trip begins by backtracking slightly along the route we took to Chur, before switching tracks toward the Alps. The first half of the journey follows the Albula River valley. The Albula River flows down from the Alps, joining the Rhien near Chur. Cattle graze on the mountain slopes along this route. We passed a number of villages and towns along the way, Tiefencastel being the largest and most scenic I recall of them. If there was a castle at Tiefencastel, though, I did not see it. The climb up from Chur is more gradual than the grade on the South side heading down to Tirano. The weather that day was sunny and clear, affording us excellent views of the scenery along the way. If we could have planned the weather, we could not have done a better job than the weather we enjoyed during this trip. As we worked up way up the valley and into the mountains, we were offered views of many of the places from multiple angles, as we could often look out the windows and see the route we had taken, far below us. We wove in and out of tunnels, and up the slopes via switchbacks, enjoying the view all along the way.Just before we left the gentle valley into the steeper slopes, we passed beneath a chair lift. There was snow visible on the slopes above us, and the chair riders on the lift were not dressed for skiing, so I must assume they were riding, as we did at Chur, to hike and to experience the views. They waved cheerfully from the lift at the passing train, and we waved back. As we had just emerged from a tunnel, I believe the lift crossed the tracks while they were underground, so they were not able to dangle their feet directly over the bright-red caterpillar that was the Bernina Express. But, as they enjoyed the ride up the slope, they passed close by the train, such that we could see their smiling faces as we passed. There are actually three different trains that comprise the Bernina Express: the Chur-St. Moritz route, the Tirano-St. Moritz route, and the Chur-Tirano route. the Chur-Tirano route, which we took, bypasses St. Moritz via a shortcut, but otherwise follows the same route as the others. The train climbs, via switchbacks and loops, to an elevation of about 2,200 meters, before descending towards Italy. At the peak, it makes a brief stop, where passengers may stretch their legs and take photos. The train then makes the descent into Tirano. As I understand it, this is done while the train switches engines, because the electrical power in the south slope is different than the power on the north slope, though I was so preoccupied with the scenery that I did notice any changes to the train.I think, if I had it to do over again, I would take the train from Chur to St. Moritz, spend a couple of hours there, and then take the train from St. Moritz to Tirano. Some suggest simply taking the train from Tirano (or Chur) to St. Moritz and back, making a day-trip of it. While that is a good idea, I think the scenery on both sides of St. Moritz make it worth taking the whole route, whereas the day-trip option misses one half or the other.
This is a great way to see some of the beautiful scenery in Switzerland. We started our trip in Lugano, starting the day with a bus trip through the lovely Italian villages and along Lake Como to Tirano. The bus driver gave some commentary along the way, trying to accommodate with three languages, English among them. In Tirano we swapped the bus for a Panoramic Train which took us to St Moritz (which is where we got off but the train continues to Chur). We travelled through the most beautiful countryside, the Morteratsch Glacier which has a 180degree turn which allows for some great photos, the Engadine, 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges, and Brusio spiral viaduct. There is an audio guide which gives you information about certain points of interest along the way, allowing time to take a picture. There is no dining car but they do bring a cart around for you to buy some snacks or drinks. It is necessary to book your tickets for this trip and they suggest to do so at least 90 days in advance. With comfortable seats, an audio guide and large panoramic windows the Bernina Express gives you an amazing experience. Well worth doing.
We travelled from Tirano to davos platz stopping off in St moritz for a stroll around to see all the bling. The train trip is spectacular and should be on everyone's to do list! Lovely comfortable train- really busy but very comfortable. It slowly climbs to extraordinary heights with ease. Stunning view after stunning view. Bring your camera! Would I go again? Absolutely!
My title may seem misleading, but the Bernina Express is a slow train through spectacular scenery and some pretty hair raising and mind-blowing civil engineering. Deep valleys with sheer drops, railway lines clinging to the edges of cliffs, a lot of spiraling tunnels and even a spiral viaduct near the Italian border. The whole journey is only about 85 miles in each direction, but it takes several hours due to terrain. A lot of photo opportunities for scenery and amazing architecture. I did the journey on New Years' day. upon arrival in Tirano, Italy, everything but 1 cafe was closed. The journey is far more impressive than the destination. So if you're in the Alps, either Italy or Switzerland, and you fancy a day's train ride, this is a good one to do. Don't forget your camera. A must on this trip.
