Steep walk up to view point nice garden in the walls with glimpses of the view. The best view is from a viewing platform in front of the monument through a little door. Note if you have any health problems get a taxi then it's a short walk up a hill or steps.
Steep climb up very narrow and quite busy road. The view over the bay to the islands was fantastic and as it was a sunny day, ideal photo opportunity.
Its not a very long or arduous accent on foot from the town centre. And its easy access from the car park. Views over Oban and the Islands are wonderful. Attractive garden/park area inside the "tower" all very clean and nicely maintained. A must if you are in the area.
Was built by McCaig to create work for the unemployed tradesmen in the town. He planned for a Art gallery museum type building but died before it could come to fruition. Great views of Oban from high above the town and a strong structure for photo opportunities. Good walk but worth it.
Its billed as a hard 10 minute walk up from the town and does live up to that claim but the view at the top definitely justifies the effort. The place has quite the history and the best view in Oban of any we've come across - go on, head for the clouds!
The tower itself, a folly modelled ostensibly on the Coliseum in Rome, is more impressive from a distance than it is when you arrive. I gather poor Mr McCaig had great plans but died before he could complete more than its outer walls. Nevertheless, the fabulous views over Oban Bay and out to Mull & the islands of Lismore & Kerrera, make the long climb from the town well worth the effort - and getting back down is much quicker!
We trekked up the 130+stairs, then the hill and more stairs to get here. Pretty much nothing else to do other than check out the lovely view. Would have been great on a clear day. Certainly burned off some calories but wouldn't feel the need to rush back! It's lovely when lit up at night, but that site can be enjoyed from the town, without the climb!!
This is an interesting construction. Nice uphill walk to get there, then the views around Oban are superb.
Hard and punishing walk to get to the top and when you do get there, there is nothing but a small grassy area inside the tower.Stunning views from the top, but you can get that almost anywhere in Oban anyway!
The climb to the top was worth it . Take a camera and soak up the outstanding views over the water. Perfect in summer or winter.
Fantastic view from the tower and the gardens are well tended but if you walk from town its a good climb up a few hills.
Overlooking Oban, in Argyll, Scotland, this magnificent stone building was started to be built in 1897 and stopped in 1902 by John Stuart McCaig and was planned to be a building to house portraits and was supposed to have a central wall structure, but work stopped when he died.you can drive to the car park at the top of the hill, and be warned the streets are narrow and one way, however the view is fantastic! There is a bit of a walk into the actual structure but you will be greeted with benches and trees and a wonderful view of the Loch. Take a picnic!
We walked up with our 3 year old, who walked the whole way. It is quite steep but it's not far from town. The building is pretty ugly and out of place (being modelled on Roman architecture it's pretty out of place in a Scottish village next to the sea!) However, it has a viewing platform which has a bench and great views. There is nothing else to do apart from take in the view. Pop into the Tourist information before you go to pick up a leaflet with the story
Travelled up the hill by car as we did not fancy an "Eddie the Eagle" type slanty 45 degree walk up the hill. The monument has ample car parking and so no real hassle. The area has some very nice gardens inside the structure and a very good vantage point for a view of Oban. OK, I suppose but I think I would have been disappointed with the view after walking. Not worth the walk in my view, needs a cable car to attract more custom.
Steep walk p to McCaigs tower, but beautiful views when you arrive. Can also get a City Bus tour that stops there. Nice to have a picnic there if sunnier.
