Visited the Wycombe museum with my 5 and 7 year old and grandparents for the first time today. I can't believe I've missed this gem to date. It kept everyone very happy for 2 hours on a rainy afternoon and I had to drag the 7 year old away when we left. I don't think I have visited a museum with so much stuff for children of different ages to do, loads of dressing up, spy trails, building full sized chairs, polishing the silver etc etc. Although there is no cafe there is self service tea and coffee and snacks. We will definitely be going back and recommending it to all my friends.
Visited this museum with daughter who is at university in the town. Easy to find, beautiful, quaint house with lovely grounds. Friendly staff creating a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, you didn't feel rushed and could wander around at your leisure.Lots of interesting items separated into different rooms. Loved the art room, imagining what the lady in the painting was thinking. The time line running along the walls added extra interest detailing local and world history.A bit random, but we really loved the upside down chair in the furniture history room. There were lots of events being advertised, it is nice to see a museum that is obviously used as more than just a place to show exhibits.Definitely worth a visit for all ages.
Hello Christine,Thank you so much for this lovely review. We are so glad you enjoyed your visit this week. You may be glad to know that we will be putting in a full cafe later this year, so hopefully when you next come you can spend even longer with us!
Hi Lynn, We're glad you enjoyed your visit to the museum, and we appreciate the review you've given us. You may be glad to know that we're currently in the planning stages of a full cafe to open later this year so our range of refreshments will soon be much enhanced.
Hi Paul,Thanks for your lovely review, we're very glad you and your family enjoy visiting us. I'll make sure to pass your compliments on to our front desk and events teams!
Spent a happy few hours here over half term with a 6&2 year old.We bought the Halloween trail and enjoyed walking round looking for clues. Was very impressed how child friendly it was and loved the amount of hands on stuff and costumes to try on. The WW1 exhibition is really nice and informative again with lots to keep little people engaged and happy. There is a small car park and a little shop and snack facilities which were all reasonably priced.Lovely!
The flint walls of this old family house lie in the lee of a wooded garden. Inside are the secrets of a furniture industry that kept hundreds of people busy in the Chilterns. To make 4,700 chairs a day at one time and sell and send them to all parts of the world was amazing. No wonder the football team was nick named the chairmen. The old kitchen still serves refreshments, and the house is called Castle Hill House. It has a Motte that is covered in trees and needs good shoes to climb up and down.
My wife and I visited the museum in late July. It's a great little museum with helpful staff and a very interesting display of local furniture making. There was a special display on the war years and a varied display of interesting items. The museum is set a little out of the centre, but it's well worth the effort to make a visit.Small museums like this are treasures and it's a credit to the council that they value the great benefits of such a facility. Aim to spend an hour, and you'll probably end up spending a little more time than you thought.
To be honest, I didn't hold out much hope for this museum. How much history could High Wycombe have?!It turned out to be really good. Five very different rooms, including a really well thought-out WWI exhibition sharing the lives and stories of local people in the war. The grounds and gardens of the house are lovely too, and all for free. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
This is a little museum packed with a lot of things. The staff work very hard to keep young children amused. Throughout the holidays they have a variety of hands-on activities, priced very reasonably. Well worth a visit if you have nothing better to do.
A small but very interesting museum set in the grounds of an old castle near the railway station. Children will enjoy the visit. Chair making history in High Wycxombe.
We have visited here many times and have always been fascinated by the displays on offer. They really offer an incredible insight into to the past life of High Wycombe but also give a glimpse of life today. They offer, from time to time, excellent activity sessions for youngsters at minimal cost.A visit not to be missed if you are in the area..
Top attraction. Fascinating display of carved wooden chairs, my favourite being the reversible garden chair which you can turn upside down if it's wet or a pigeon used it first. The teacher's high chair, reminiscent of high chairs at swimming pools and tennis matches, was another novelty. I loved the video showing how chair legs were turned with a foot-operated string.Plenty for children to do and touch. Small selection of toys to buy.The current premises are a delightful old house but the steep stairs make the upstairs in accessible to some people so the council plans to move the whole caboodle to their more modern central location. The old kitchen is another delight. Loved the explanation of how electricity changed the domestic house. No wonder all the men had beards before electricity. The timelines were useful too.
Wycombe Museum is housed in a small, flint walled building on the edge of High Wycombe. Naturally there was an up to date exhibition featuring the history of Wycombe Wanderers FC but there is also a display featuring the history of furniture making and a timeline of the history of the area. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. It won't take you long to see everything but if you are in High Wycombe the museum is well worth a visit.
