Wonderful ruin. English Heritage gem which is well worth a visit. Visited on a sunny, albeit cold, windy February day. Picnic tables within the walls no doubt make it even more appealing in warmer months.Another benefit to us was that it was approx only 400 mtrs from the Three Horseshoes Inn which provided awesome accommodation for our first visit to the town. Will post seperate review soon.

Barnard castle is a "must see" as far as I am concerned. It isnot expensive to look round, has quite a sizeable amount of the castle left to look at. Set in peaceful surroundings, on a warm day with a picnic basket there is nothing nicer. Scattered around the castle ruins are information boards detailing what part of the castle you are in etc. very informative and relaxing day can be spent not only at the castle but also in the town.

Tucked away just off the high street, it was lovely to pop into the castle grounds. Discovered a little garden (with some ducks hiding under a hedge!). Also enjoyed exploring the castle with the kids. A little English Heritage kiosk with a helpful person. Enjoyed an ice cream and really relaxed here!

Nice little town with some unique shops. People were very helpful and friendly and I can recommend Clarendons for a cuppa or light lunch.

Visited on a quiet winters day. A lovely spot overlooking the Tees river. Set right next to the town which is well worth a quiet look around.

Bernard Castle is a lovely place, the castle is just ruins if you like that sort of thing, but the town is a lovely going back in time place, a lot of butchers selling pies!

Although the ruins are well maintained and the grounds kept well - It is unfortunate that there is so little left. However ? still worth the visit and entry fee. We got some very good panoramic photos of the ruins and the view looking down on the river and village bridge below.

It had been over 30 years since I had visited Barnard Castle and forgotten what a lovely castle it is. The views over the river and surrounding countryside are beautiful. Really need to buy a book about the castle to enjoy it completely. Worth a visit. The town of Barnard Castle is interesting and pretty.

We stayed for four days in Barnard Castle and really enjoyed exploring the town and surrounding areas. The castle itself is well worth a visit and the town has a lovely winding street with old buildings, most of them being shops. There is a good range of shops, including charity shops, vintage and antique shops, chemists, high street and independent stores. There is also a market on some days. There are lots of cafes and tea shops and there are car parks both sides of the main street, but these can get busy in the middle of the day. There are some free parking spaces at the side of the street, except on market days, but these get snapped up quickly. A lovely small market town and well worth a visit!

Visited on a Saturday afternoon, wasn't very busy (maybe 2 other couples). It was a nice castle but some of the plaques which give you information on certain parts of the building were either damaged or removed therefore unable to read which was unfortunate. I think English Heritage need to fix this as at least one of the damaged plaques looked like it was caused by weather damage which would not of happened overnight (basically, I'm pretty sure these have been in this state for a while). Apart from this though, there are some really nice views of the river below and it's the kind of castle I think kids would love as there's buildingservices to climb up and large grassy areas etc.
