Obviously the main reason people visit this church (other than for worship) is the copy of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, on their own ceiling. The work, which is two thirds the size of the original was a labour of love by one of the parishoners which took over five years to complete. I didn't know quite what to expect I'm pleased to say that I was knocked out by this work of art. It really is fantastic and I am assured by those among our party who had seen the original that this was a exact copy. There is also some lovely stained glass in the church plus some more work by the artist. Well worth a visit. There is no fee for the visit but please leave a donation.
I did not know what to expect following various press and TV coverage on this very modest local church, a parishioner has spent over 5 years reproducing a scale reproduction of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling (further work is still under way) it is simply a wonderful sight to behold, easy parking, free but a small donation gratefully accepted, also some nice (non rip offI items for purchase in the shop.
amazing church even if you are not religious ceiling is awesome well worth visit no charge small donation gratefully accepted
Despite living here in Worthing for four years, this was the first time I had got round to seeing this church. In a kind of odd setting, the edge of a residential area, but reasonable parking outside. Definitely worth a visit, and whilst doesn't compare to the real thing, an excellent attempt.
I have just been to see this very modest English Catholic Church,, where a Parishener has reproduced the Sistine Chapel ceiling in his local seaside church. He has produced an exact scaled replica on the church ceiling single handedly over a period of five and a half years. It's impact is breathtaking, and also the stained glass windows are amazing, as are some of his other paintings, including his Own version of The Last Supper.Get visiting! There is a humbling atmosphere to the church and the ladies in the shop are charming, informative, and helpful.
This church should be on the list of things to see before you die. Yes I am talking about the incredible ceiling which is a replica of the cistern chapel in Rome . Even more incredible is the gentleman who painted it. The whole wonderful experience was told to us in great detail by a lovely lady guide. Go and see for yourself!!
Visited this fantastic place the paintings really blow your mind so lovely , then it was time to findsome lunch within a short distance there is a lovely old pub called The Bull ,food really great and staff really look after you and great value for money in all a very nice day out
The paintings are fantastic and the people on site are more than prepared to fill in any information about the church.
I wandered round the churchyard after staying at a nearby b&b and before I visited a sick relative. It was a lovely sanctuary before having to deal with more pressing matters. The locals were friendly and welcoming. The previous evening was bell ringing practice which I listened to from my b&b room. Altogether lovely and uplifting.
I am so sorry that we were closed when you visited us. We are open to people wishing to view the ceiling Tuesday - Friday from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm until the end of October.
The English Martyrs Curch in Compton Avenue, Goring-by-Sea, is an unimpressive building externally. But don't be put off by this because inside is a most impressive work of art. Gary Bevans spent more than 5 years reproducing the Sistine Chapel ceiling and it is a remarkable sight. We visited on 3 September 2014 and received a warm welcome from the volunteer on duty.If you find yourself in Worthing a visit to this church is highly recommended.
A really great and totally unexpected experience. My family and friends and I visited this Church in late August 14 and spent 2 hours in totla awe of what has been done here.
Definitely worth visiting, we went on a Sunday at around 11.30am and a service had just ended. The Priest was lovely and very welcoming, as were the other staff/volunteers and even the congregation that had stayed after the service. The Church seems nothing special from the outside, but inside the roof is so beautiful. It's so worth going just to see it, it's beautiful, and everyone is willing to tell you the story about it being painted and show you the photos of it. There's also a gift shop that has a good variety of things, including videos of the roof being painted.
I read about this tiny, unimpressive little church and its amazing replica of the sistine chapel, so we decided to go and visit for ourselves. Seeing as we are very unlikely ever to see the real thing in Rome, this was the closest we would come to the experience for real. Gary Bevans, the artist, has had no formal art training, being a sign writer by trade, but I was just blown away by his replica, which took him five and a half years to complete. It took us an hour and a half each way, traveling by car, but was well worth the journey. We were fortunate in that there was a very helpful and knowledgeable curator on hand, who guided us through many of the individual segments of the painting, explaining what and who they represented.I feel at least now I have seen the Sistine chapel, even if it was in replica.
We were having a few days in Steyning and a friend suggested that we visit this church in nearby Goring. Well, were we in for a surprise!!!! Could hardly believe it. Absolutely fantastic.Brilliant art work......quite breathtaking. It is not open on a Sunday for visitors. So check which days it is open to the public.
