Kettle's Yard is very homely and full of art and sculpture. It used to be four cottages but has been knocked into one. There are plenty of chairs and sofas around and visitors are encouraged to sit on them so that they can enjoy the art and things of interest around the cottage. It is a different sort of museum and one not to be missed.

Thank you for your lovely review, I'm glad that you enjoy Kettle's Yard. Just so you know, the gallery and house will close from 22 June 2015 while we undertake a major redevelopment. We are delighted to be beginning work on our major development project. Kettle’s Yard: Looking Ahead will create a new Education Wing, environmentally controlled galleries and improved services for visitors including a café, to create a better Kettle's Yard for all. The house at Kettle's Yard will remain untouched, however we need to close the site completely for the safety of the collection. More information and detailed plans can be viewed here: http://www.kettlesyard.co.uk/about/development-plans/ There will be a range of activities going on while we're off site so please do keep an eye on our website to find out more.Best wishes,Susie Biller

With two friends, we see out to Cambridge by train from London. Kettle's Yard was the highlight of our tour. Picturesque, interesting with beautiful sculptures and prints set in the quaint cottages. The vision of Mr Ede has been faithfully fulfilled.Free? THEY COULD HAVE CHARGED £10,it would still have been good value.. Kettles Yardis an absolute must see for people visiting Cambridge.

Kettle's Yard has some very good contemporary art exhibitions. The House is an interesting and tranquil space- well worth a visit.

Someday - all museums/galleries will be like this!Started with the gallery - fascinating small exhibition. Thoughtfully arranged and informative.Visited the adjoining House/permanent collection. Rang the bell to a lovely, genuine welcome. We were made to feel relaxed although it was a busy day. Lots of space to sit and appreciate the surroundings. Great that there are no labels, but someone unobtrusively on hand to answer questions. Artworks are informally displayed in the domestic setting. Wonderfully light and airy rooms. One of those rare places that has taken a long time to get around to visit, but will become one of our most favourite destinations.

Friends had recommended this place but i didn't really know what to expect. I went round the gallery first but soon realised that the main attraction is the house. This is in fact several small cottages knocked through to create a lovely open plan feel. When you enter you initially feel that it is all quite small scale but once you are upstairs you can see how the cottages have been opened up. You are encouraged to sit on the chairs to absorb the artwork which has often been placed at a suitable low level. There are lots of chairs and sofas scattered throughout the house so it is a lovely place to relax. The staff are clearly very proud of the house and protective over its contents. You cannot carry your coat or bag around and need to leave it with staff. There is no charge for the visit. I will definitely go back to have another visit and allow longer for my trip. This is something quite different to try in Cambridge and away from all the crowds.

It's a collection of 20th century art in a restful relaxed home. It feels just like dropping in on a friend's house while they happen to be out. It's peaceful. The guides are friendly, like acquaintances and you can sit on the comfortable chairs and take in the art, or just chill out. There are no ropes The art is representative, lots of prints but interesting furniture as well, and the very clever use of light just helps the atmosphere. It's open Tuesday to Saturday in the afternoons.

Do not leave Cambridge before visiting this little gem of a place. For art lovers Cambridge is one hell of a place but this tiny gallery and its next door house is for me the jewel in the crown.First the gallery...owned and run by The University Of Cambridge it is a modern light airy place that specialises on British Art both old and new. Artist like Peter Lanyon Roger Hilton Henry Moore Ben Nicholson and William Scott have all been well served over the years. It has a great bookshop and work room plus hosts music and poetry all year round. The works are never crowded and info about the works are easy to read. Toilets and disabled access are well catered for.Next the Kettles Yard House...this house ow ed by Jim Eade and left to Cambridge Uni ersity after his death is a tardis like house which on 3 levels simply takes ones breath away. With works by all the leading 20th Century European artists such as .Piper Scott Lowry Nicholson Hepworth Wood Gabo Hilton Miro Moore Auerbach Brancusi ...the list goes on.This though is not a stuffy place..it was Jim Ede's house and all the works were gathered or given to him by the artists themselves. He often helped struggling artists and bought thier work when no one else was interested. You enter by ringing a pull bell and ushered in by 2 old ladies who are polite by thorough. All bags or large items are left in a cupboard and one signes the visitors book. Wandering around one doesnt feel under pressure and the guidea are ready a d willing to offer up info and stories about the artists and their work. Leave yourself at least an hour and a half to take it all and browse the library as it contains many rare art books. Before you leave take time to visit the little Church of St Peter next door on a little hill. Its a calm place amidst the hustle and bustle of Cambridge.

What an experience ! I just loved this house. From the moment the door was opened by the very courteous gentleman to the time I reluctlantly had to leave, I found a beautiful object, painting or space to admire. On arrival, we were told not to touch anything but that we could sit on any one of the many chairs to admire the art work. My advice is to sit down and just look !! The sculptures, paintings, chairs, and all items are so perfectly placed to capture the light. I just loved the whole experience and will definitely vist again. It is hard to describe this house but dont be turned off by the size. It is full of surprises.

Well worth a visit. At first it looks like one tiny house but as you start to explore it opens up into t world of art and space and light.

The house is quite quirky & you get a good sense of how passionate the owners were about art. It is a surprisingly big space & a nice diversion from all the shops in town.
