red lion windmill (molen de roode leeuw)

We love visiting mills, especially working ones where you can buy flour, semolina, etc. In the UK they are invariably out-of-town so you can imagine our surprise to find two in the city!It's possible to enter the mill (€1.50 at the time of writing) and climb to the platform that runs around the outside. The mill is in good working order but the ladders are steep. There are good views of the city from the platform. The mill was turning when we visited so it's sensible to avoid going near the sails.The adjacent shop sells many types of flour, such as wheat, rye and oat, mainly as bread mixes. Taste the difference from flour produced by industrial roller mills. Stone-ground flour is nuttier and retains more of the oil from the husk. Recommended.

My five year old son and I have been reading a book called "de molen" about a family of millers at the Roode Leuuw Molen. He decided that we should visit the mill, meet the little boy, and see if they would let us climb on the “wieken” (blades of the windmill) like the boy did in the book. This posed a few problems like such as the book was published in 1991 so the boy was more like 23 now and they didn’t exactly give the address for the Red Lion mill and there are over 1,000 such mills in the Netherlands (although not all still grind grain like this one). We found the name of the mill on the bags of grain on one of the pages (the mill isn’t directly named in the book) along with the town name of Gouda. We all liked the mill even though it was being renovated and especially liked the winkel and the discarded mill stones because we could see how rough they were. Unfortunately, the store was closed on Sunday but that was okay as we plan to pop in another time on our way somewhere to buy some mill flour. We spent the rest of the day wandering the quiet Sunday streets and could see that Saturday shopping would be great in Gouda. We made our way to a stunning square where we had pannekoeken, chased pigeons (at least the boys did) and watched the little carillon on the city hall.
