One of the reasons to visit Rotterdam and we were not disappointed. Wonderfull buzzling place with a lot of food under a colourfull ceiling.
The Markthal is an impressive piece of architecture. It opened at the end of 2014. Great to look at from the outside, and featuring an indoor market (great variety of foods!), shops, restaurants and around 230 apartments). It should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Rotterdam. Do not forget to look up when you're inside the building; the whole ceiling has been decorated by artist Arno Coenen.
We got a tip from aquaintances, the the Market Hall in Rotterdam might be worth a visit.....MIGHT??? It was the Highlight. Unfortunately, we ate breakfast before going!!! That was a mistake. We won't eat before our next visit. The atmosphere is wonderful. The People were so friendly. They explained everything. We loved it!
Really nice building in the center of Rotterdam. Nice atmosphere inside, astonishing architecture, beautiful paintings !
This indoor market has it all, from murals all around the building to some great restaurant , stalls and bars. A one stop shop for all your needs you might say !!!!
My friend read about the Markthal that opened in November 2014 in an architectural magazine and since we were in the Netherlands over the Holidays, we decided to take a day trip to this lovely food hall. I have been to other food halls in cities like Philadelphia and Stuttgart and the concept is the same with all kinds of fresh and international foods on display under one roof. What makes Rotterdam so interesting is that this roof is decorated with a cornucopia of food and flowers. I read somewhere that it was like the "Sistine Chapel" of Rotterdam and it was quite amazing. The neat part is that there are actually about 200 apartments hiding behind the huge grapes on the ceiling and the apartment windows look into the Markthal. The dimensions of this hall are just gigantic and I had a hard time capturing a photo of my mom and my best friend outside because it is such a large structure. The food stands and restaurants range from Vietnamese, to Belgian chocolates, to Stroopfwafel stands, to Turkish to Chinese. You can find it all here under one roof and the hardest part will be picking what and where to eat. We drove into Rotterdam and there was ample parking on the many levels below in the garage. The Markhthal is also on Travel and Leisure's list of places to visit in 2015 so you might as well check it out!
Been waiting for it to complete since i came to Rotterdam few years ago. At last and very exited to check out the place with friends and bf. Impressive interior and Rotterdam really live up to their advance architecural city. A stone throw from Blaak metro, is easy access by foot from central or by metro(even train from other cities).Huge variaties of food all around the world, and very happy to see they have asian food store around as well. A bit pricy especially 16euro for a bowl of "pho". Very crowded during weekend and peak hours, all shops closes pretty early around 6ish. Ventilation is pretty bad, and we smells like food after we came out. Good concept for an in-door market. New attraction in town for sure.
having just a day to look round Rotterdam we made this one of our must see places as the architecture looked interesting. It was a very impressive building and the only market i have seen people queue to get in.My advice would be to go early when its quieter. The stalls of cheeses meats breads and chocolate were a feast for the eyes a great place to buy supplies for a picnic or to sit for lunch in one of the many small cafes. The upper level contains restaurants and there is a large supermarket on the lower floor so the place is well used by locals.Toilets are spotless but will cost 70cents to use.
The Markthal is more interesting as an architectural proposition than an indoor food market. The building is very imposing and contains housing, restaurants and demanding food "market" stalls. It is certainly not your cheap local market, but if you are after speciality meats, there was plenty on offer. We visited on the weekend and a weekday - the market has only been open for a few months so it is not surprising that it was absolutely packed on Saturday. Our visit on Monday was much more relaxed. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Rotterdam - especially as it is close to Laurens church and paper clip houses. The surrounding architecture is also worth a look. But definitely not the place for a weekly market shop.
When you see the Market you get hungry and greedy. You want to taste everything. We went to eat at Baque Café which was a HUGE disappointment. Very poor quality of food. Such a pity. But the market itself is a gem.
I am staying very close to Markthal for one month and I am impressed with the variety of cheeses, sweeties, cakes, breads, sushi places, meats, spices, pubs, restaurants and many other things that if you are in the center of Rotterdam you should go and see.
The building itself is amazing combining appartments with a lively food court/market which actually has some very nice foodie-places to choose from. Staff in general very friendly and prices OK. But do not forget to look up and around and admire the structure of the building. Absolutely unique and a fine competitor foor food haal anywhere else in the world
Really cool place for great food and shopping. This place is a bit like an uber trendy and modern market. Think Le Suquet in Cannes meets Knightsbridge and you have just about got this place. Such a variety of stuff and although not cheap it is certainly a must-see visit of your in town. Great architecture too and boy, what a wonderful ceiling! Good for a full-on meal or a quick snack and a drink.
