Nice, renovated building with a large play area available for birthday rentals, surrounded by a decent size garden, walking paths, etc.
Very nicely maintained trails, close to town, but feel as if they are more remote. Take your camera - interesting ruins of an old brick factory, and old log cabin tucked into the woods, and a pond with pretty reflections of clouds, and an Audubon bird blind for viewing wildlife. A few hills, nothing strenuous. A very peaceful environment close to town.
My son loves going here. He enjoys the animals and looking through the microscope. Great place for the explorer in you and your children.
I took my family here and we really enjoyed it. I came here as a kid a few times myself and I had forgotten how relaxing it was. Even though Athens is just a short distance away, it is very peaceful. My son enjoyed the fishing, although he didn't catch much. I would recommend if you want to relax.
Another place i love taking my family to, we love to walk the entire park every time we come we discover new things, like bats sleeping in trees on the middle of the day or Red tailed hawks, falcons, great variety of birds, overall a great place.
Friendly staff, Updated nature exhibits, hiking trails, great outing for families in Athens. They have live reptiles and fish native to Georgia. The museum was recently expanded and well worth a visit!
Let's see where to start.......my kid has been to camp here, loved it.I've played Disc Golf here.....loved it !Been to a concert here, loved it!Dog show, the same !Every time I have been here, I have always enjoyed myself, especially the North Georgia Folk Festival, wow was that a good time !If your visiting Athens, be sure to stop by. Get a bigger display aquarium for those Diamond Back Terrapins however. Way too small.
I went there this morning with a friend with mobility problems. We walked safely and with enjoyment on the wooden-ramped trail. Heard and saw about five kinds of birds, enjoyed naming the trees, saw an Eastern box turtle. It would be impossible not to learn something new in their recently renovated exhibit hall. We both enjoyed the turtles, fish, snakes, and frogs. The small library was cozy and had terrific books.
Visited with my 5-year-old on a sunny day. He loved the turtles as well as all of the hands-on activities. We had so much fun, we came back for a second day! Gives an excellent overview of Georgia habitats and industries, in a format that allows for rich interaction between adults and kids.
We did a quick visit to the Sandy Creek Nature Center. It was my husband, me, and my parents (in their 60's). It was a perfect little stop along our way in touring Athens. We walked through the very well-done education space and then walked the ADA accessible wooden path. Spent about an hour there on a gorgeous spring day! Loved it!
We went on a Saturday morning. We got there just in time to join a free nature walk around one of the trails. There were 10 of us ranging from ages 16 months to 76 years. It was nice to be outside on a beautiful sunshiny day. But we also ALL greatly enjoyed the exhibit hall. It was neat. The children really enjoyed it. They could touch things and explore. Definitely would go back again. It was all free. They also do birthday parties there, but I do not have any details on that.
A good adventure with the kids during the summer. There are numerous trails showing various natural habitats of Georgia. Usually see some sort of wildlife from birds, snakes, turtles, occasional deer.
Our family loves going to the Sandy Creek Nature Center, either for an impromptu visit or for a program led by the dedicated and knowledgeable staff and volunteers. The trails are great for little ones (there are forest trails and short boardwalk trails, perfect for a stroller) as well as older children and adults. My kids caught their first fish at Clay Pit Pond, and they all love playing creatively at the puppet center, visiting the planetarium, and seeing the fish, turtles and snakes. Birthday parties there are inexpensive, memorable, and fun. We all have learned so much about nature at Sandy Creek Nature Center, and feel very thankful to have such a wonderful resource right in our own community!
With recent improvements many exhibits are now of interactive science museum quality. A great fun and educational experience. There are also nice outdoor trails. What a great resource for our community!
We love the Sandy Creek Nature Center. The Athens community and visitors are so fortunate to have a resource like the Nature Center. It's perfect for a short visit to wander around the exhibit hall/visitors' center. The Sandy Creek Nature Center has great educational programs for children of all ages (Babies & Beasties, Knee-High Naturalists, summer camps, etc). Its Annual Snake Day is a don't-miss!The staff is professional, knowledgeable, helpful, and most importantly, they make learning about nature FUN! The facility is magical and informative, and the staff and visitors take great care of it because it's very clean and in outstanding condition. We also had a birthday party there recently, and it was educational, easy, affordable and entertaining. The children had a blast learning about nature and even getting to go outside for a short hike.I cannot say enough positive things about the Nature Center. It is one of our favorite places in Athens. If you haven't visited yet, you are truly missing out.
