There are only two Abenaki museums in Vermont, part of the homeland (Ndakinna, "our land) of the aboriginal people. This one has a very friendly and informative staff and a growing collection of artifacts from area Natives as well as a diverse offering of pan-Indian gifts. My experience of the museum is that it is an excellent effort to bring together the history, cultures, and all Abenaki bands, clans, and peoples. Among the most outstanding artifacts are Wabanaki baskets which are set apart by their distinctive swirls. The center and museum are doing a spectacular job of supporting modern-day Native projects and peoples, and this is a very worthwhile non-profit to support. FYI: The museum is moving to East Calais in November 2008, and it's always good to check their website for the latest events and other news.
