A great attraction near Ely, Nevada. This drugstore operated in McGill from 1907 to 1979. It closed when mining declined in the area.Proprietor Dan Braddock has maintained the drugstore just as it was when open. The (now-defunct) Rexall sign shines outside the store. The counter serves fountain Coca Cola and ice cream. The store contains just what it did when closing in '79: extinct razor blades like Personna and Wilkinson, the liquid chemicals which were mixed for prescriptions, antique doll house and model railroad, throwback greeting cards from that era, etc., etc.Dan puts on a big red bowtie and soda-jerk's hat to add to the old-time effect. You really feel like you have stepped back 35 years in time while in this store. Dan is a wealth of knowledge about the area, located in picturesque White Pine County. The county sits mainly above 6,000 feet elevation, up to 13,000 feet. Its roads will take travelers as high as 10,500 feet. Within 30 miles of McGill and Ely, we saw antelope, elk, foxes and deer while driving the almost-deserted roads.White Pine County is a great place to get away from it all. We were there for 4 days over Labor Day weekend, amazed with the area's natural splendor and lack of tourists. Both White Pine County and the McGill Drugstore Museum are hidden gems.Don't miss them! The drugstore website is www.mcgilldrugstoremuseum.org. For a tour, call Dan Braddock to arrange one at (775) 235-7802.McGill and Ely are quite remote. The nearest big city, Las Vegas, is 240 miles Southwest. No urban newspapers can be found other than the local Ely weekly. This is a great place to just get away.
