Well Australia has its Sovereign Hill at Ballarat but nothing compares to Virginia City. This place is the real deal. If you are my vintage and remember the golden days of television during the late 50's through the 60's and into the early days of colour television, then this place is a treasure. Totally devoid of today's accommodation, service stations, fast food outlets and freeways, this is as close to America's West and you can get (I think). They have got this place just right. Just make your way to Reno on the freeway system and you will see the signs to Virginia City. Book into one of the original hotels and go drink beer and eat with the locals, you will love it.
This was our second visit to Virginia City, and we found ourselves asking why we bothered to return. The first visit was in summer, and the place was fairly crowded with most stores open. Sadly, most stores carried the usual tourist junk and were not interesting. This visit was in January, the weather was bitterly cold and windy, and many of the shops were not open at all. Those that were seemed to be the ones with the same old tourist junk. It was our last visit, and we don't recommend you waste your time.
We took an unexpected detour on our car trip after I saw Virginia City on the map. I thought, wow, I want to go there, remembering the Westerns of the '60s such as Bonanza and The Virginian. What a great place and so authentic. Wooden boardwalks and great little stores and unusual neat things. Good workmanship. We were in a hurry and didn't spend as much time as I would have liked. One needs about 3 hours to stroll leisurely and then have a bite to eat somewhere. So maybe 4 hours.Great place I'd recommend to visit.
You cant go wrong from this little city. Remember Bonanza? they took trips there all the time! :)Go to the Cemetery and read the headstones
This amazing place was such a surprise find on our road trip. Great old time feel to the place is still there. The antique shops were brilliant and we made many purchases. The coffee shop had the best coffee of our entire trip in the US. All the shop keepers were extremely friendly and we really had a great time exploring. Would recommend anyone travelling to reno or Carson city to make the short journey to see this special town.
We had so much fun here going through all of the vintage treasures. The prices are very reasonable and the people were all friendly and helpful. Will definitely be returning soon!
The mall is located at 54 North C Street. There are 2 different stores: Wright Stuff Antiques and VC's Treasure Island. Both are huge and filled to the brim with rare and fabulous finds. I spent hours in each store. The mall is a "must see" when you are visiting Virginia City. Also, in the back of "Junk Alley", there is a wonderful photo op of a old time jail. Take photos of your loved ones behind bars. We had so much fun there!
