Beautiful, very romantic and secluded. The sand was soft and black. The ocean was a bit rough, so we did not dare enter the water. Peaceful and breathtaking!
Wow! Secluded, no one on the beach, but us until the end when the local kids were getting ready for an evening bonfire. Beautiful, not sandy, more pebbles so mind your feet, but worth it! Great to walk along the shore.
We were there all by ourselves to enjoy the beautiful sunset. The beach was beautiful. Full of perfectly smooth skipping rocks.
Black sand beach is gorgeous. If you love to walk on the beach, watch whales, observe awe inspiring waves that crash like thunder on the beach. It's just God's artistry at it's best!
Just WoW, one of the best beach i have ever visited and we managed to see Sea lions . Well recommended
The shore in this part of California is pretty rugged. There are nice beaches (black sand) you can walk on, but the rocky coast is the prettiest. LOTS of wildlife to see...whales, seals, otters. We climbed all over the rocks and found tidal pools with cool stuff.
It's a big beach so no fear of feeling crowded in. We do recommend shoes vs. flip-flops for the beach though.
If you meet Dina of Shelter Cove, she can show you around the beach. It is a good hike to the beach and the sand is mysteriously black. If you are an oceanographer or a geologist I recommend this place for you.
Loved it! Can't wait to return. The feeling of the warm pebbles on your back is bliss. Hiked down to the rock pile but will be prepared to go further next time.
A hideway to relaxe & unwind! Secluded and romantic! Affordable yet clean and comfortable with a million dollar view rigth out the back door of the room! Friendly locals. Walking distance to the bar that servd good food and a Deli that madw great breakfast Burittos after 9 am
We stayed 2 nights in Shelter Cove. We went down to the black sand beach. It was August and most of the time it was foggy and cold. The beach is big but we were the only people there. It is pretty to look at but you can't swim there and since it was so cold you couldn't take out a towel and just sit and hang out. Wear sneakers or shoes on the beach. Flip flops were no good due to the rocky sand. Also the parking is way up the hill.
There is NOTHING not to like about it. It's stunning! There are miles and miles of black sand beach to walk. There are a lot of places to fish and a fish cleaning station by the boat launch. For us...watching the sea from our spectacular balcony was enough!
Unlike almost any other beach in California, here you are often alone except for people you came with! The surf is very powerful and the area usually has very few people. When we visited, my wife and I and her sister and husband were the only people on the beach. Several hours later when we left there were two other couples with miles and miles of beach with waves breaking on rocks. It was wonderful!
I hesitate to review this beach as I'd prefer to keep it to myself! However, considering it is quite out of the way I don't see people coming in droves anytime soon. To call it "black sand" is a bit strange as it isn't like any other sandy beach I've ever visited. The kids didn't like the cinder-like feel on their feet and building sand castles isn't really an option, but it a very unique place. The trip from the parking lot to the beach is not for those who have difficulty walking; the views and peaceful surroundings are so worth it though! Definitely worth a visit!
I don't have much to write about Little Black Sand Beach except that it provides one of the many beautiful views available to you when you visit Shelter Cove. Shelter Cove is a place you go to relax, walk/hike, and take in the views; it is not a place to go if you cannot exist peacefully within yourself (and the people, if any, who came with you).
