Stopped by, and the rounds are pretty. We walked in and it was a cafe type restaurant. To the right was the tasting area. Wines are good, many you will see in stores and such. I think the wines were good. The "wine tasting" experience wasn't highlighted very well as the smell of food and clinking of plates and such distracted.
My and my husband where on a road trip in CA and went to Lodi because we both love Zinfandel, and have had a lot of wines from Lodi that we enjoyed a lot. We started with lunch at Michael David Winery, they only had tacos on the menu, and the tacos were great, so was the Mexican soup. But as we expected, the spicy taco didn't match very well with the wine. The wine tasting was great, nice wines and service minded staff. Since we came all the way from Sweden, they let us try some extra wines for free that wasn't offered on the menu, they also gave us a sneak peak of the new 7 deadly zins label. Michael David Winery is well worth a visit, but start with the wine tasting and end with the tacos, and make sure you don't have wine to the taco!
Not only is their wine wonderful, but the cafe serves excellent food accompanied by friendly service. I recently had the lamb burger special and it was great. Excellent flavor and cooked perfectly. Try their wine, join the wine club and stay for lunch...you will enjoy it.
The grounds, store, and restaurant are beautiful. There are all sorts of treats around that are hard to resist. The wine is excellent. The food is equally good.
My husband and I have been Wine Club Members at Michael David Winery for more years than I can remember. My parents and our daughter and son-in-law are Members too! All of their wines are exceptional. We have never had one that we didn't like. Of course we have our favorites, but in our experience, it is very unusual for a winery to produce such consistently great wines and not to have at least a couple that we would consider average. They have a broad range of prices for their wines, so something for everyone. The least expensive wine that they produce is Grandpa Don's Lodi Red; named for the Patriarch of the family. It is a great, hearty and smooth red blend for $9.00 non-member price. We also love their Chardonnay, but Michael David's is mostly likely known for their phenomenal reds that they produce; probably most widely known is the 7 Deadly Zins, but do yourself a favor and next time passing by the Lodi area, stop in and taste some of their other wines. You'll be glad that you did! Also, this place has a lot of history. It started as Phillips Farms, started by Don Phillips and his wife, which was a local produce market. Their sons decided they wanted to get in to the Wine Business. The Wine Tasting Room is in the original quaint building (built by Don himself) which also houses a small cafe serving delicious home style breakfast and lunch dishes. The middles section of the building is still a produce market and a place to buy homemade pies, fresh breads, etc. There is also a lovely spot outside if you want to have a picnic or buy some food and enjoy the patio area. This is unlike any other Winery we have ever been to. Small town "homey" and welcoming, but with a knack to produce superb wines. We love to visit while traveling north and south on I-5, but we also look forward to our Wine Club shipments because we know that every bottle we receive will be delicious!
Conveniently located just off Hwy.I-5 on Hwy. 12--so, after picking up a family member from the Sacramento airport, we decided to make a brief stop before having lunch in the quaint little town of Lodi before heading home. We enjoyed a tasting of their many wines, all which were pleasant. There was fresh produce, baked pies and lunch also available for purchase near the tasting area. Went outdoors which made a beautiful backdrop for picture taking. The picturesque and spacious grounds have a couple of huge and beautiful willow trees, a man-made pond, corn maze, bocce ball pits, and more. Enjoyed Michael David Winery so much I made plans to return a few days later after dropping my family member off at the airport. Met an informative and congenial host, Kathy, who assisted us with our tasting and the purchase of about a case and 1/2 of wine including Earthquake 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, 7 Deadly Zins, Freakshow and Don's Blend Lodi Red. Thanks for the great grapes. We'll thoroughly enjoy and hopefully be back to visit again soon!
We visited the Michael David Winery & tasting room during a 3-day visit to Lodi. It’s on the southwest side of Lodi right on California Route 12. In addition to the winery and tasting room, they have flower and vegetable fields with a small market and flower shop plus a bakery and cafe in association with their tasting room. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The wines were also very nice. The nominal tasting fee is waived if you buy a glass or bottle of their wine. We purchased a couple of bottles to take with us to share with friends later in our extended trip. We bought a bottle of their 2012 “Earthquake” Old Vine Zinfandel and one of their 2012 “6th Sense” Syrah, both of which were very good.
Visited during the week and our tasting experience can be best described as "mechanical." We enjoy learning a bit about the wines, winemaker, etc...but not much info provided here. Not rude or curt, simply mechanical.Enjoyed the Michael David Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
We come out here every Halloween to get our pumpkins and walk through the field of festive "scarecrows" and tunnels of hay. We eat pumpkin ice-cream and get to listen to music. There is wine tasting and beautiful country all around. This has been a tradition in our family for decades! This time of year, July, there is so much produce in the store and, as always, the freshly made pies are fabulous! We have a jewel right here in Lodi!
This is great family winery. Home to 7 Deadly Zins, Earthquake Zin and Cab, 6th Sense Syrah (my favorite) to name a few. They always have fun events scheduled like Reggae and Rhone. The winery has Bocci courts and areas for the kids.
Nice tasting room. Lots of gift items available. Very nice wines; very reasonable. They also do events. Easy location on Hwy 12. We like to stop by and try the new wines---and some old familiar ones...!
We drove down to Michael David winery to celebrate Father's Day. They brought in a terrific band that played music from the 80s. The food and dishes with the fruits and vegetables are especially good. The place is very kid friendly with a ton of room for them to run around and play. We will come back here for sure!
We went here for breakfast before tasting, and the cafe food was delicious with good service. Mostly the typical items you'd expect for breakfast, but everything was very fresh and tasty. They offer one of the broadest selections of wine at any Lodi winery, including Rhone and Bordeaux varietals, and, of course, Zinfandel. They offer wines at a number of price points and honestly, I have never had a wine here that was anything less than very good, and often much, much better than that. Service is always friendly, but they do get crowded, and sometimes you can get lost in the crowd when they are extremely busy (especially weekends). Their premium zins run about $60, but members get a very good price break. They also have a number of wines at the $15-30 level that are very delicious. Most wines are sourced locally, but a few of the wines are from other CA vineyards in places like Mendocino or Dry Creek or Amador. For sheer variety and high quality, this is a must-visit in Lodi. $5 to taste the lower-end wines, $10 to taste the higher-end wines, all tasting fees refundable with purchase.
Yes they make wine that is sold at grocery stores, so this, to me, means they are not pretentious (and are trying to make a living) , which is sadly rare nowadays in wine country. Its far from the negative connotaions of "commercial wineries." They make great wine and they sell it at prices that everyone can afford to enjoy. The people are very kind, the facility itself is down to earth. We love the Earthquake Zinfandel, and yes it was under $30, and yes it is delicious! Petite (sirah) Petit (verdot) is always great too. Please don't let the snobs phase you, this is a great stop for everyone to truly enjoy the wine and the company you are with, without breaking the bank. We had very little time to spend in Lodi before heading to Napa, and I am so glad this is one of the vineyards we were able to see!
This is the home of a favorite inexpensive Zin, Seven Deadly Zins. So we wanted to try the tasting experience. The hostess was informative but the cashier was all but rude. It was if she didn't want to be there. The best part of the tasting was a Club member who happened by to pick up wine. She gave us several excellent recommendations of other places to taste.
