We had met Gideon, the winemaker and owner of Clos Saron, years ago when he was at another winery that we visited once. I was given a bottle of Clos Saron recently and was impressed with the wine. I looked it up and recognized Gideon's name. He couldn't have been more welcoming when I emailed him and mentioned that our family was going to be in the area. We made an appointment and visited the small vineyard in the Sierra Foothills north of Sacramento and I80, not too far from Marysville, Yuba City, Nevada City and Grass Valley. We went with our 13 year old son who enjoyed learning about the biodynamic method of growing the grapes and other products on the property. It's even more natural and earth-friendly than certified "organic" wines. There are animals galore -- ducks and geese, dogs and sheep. There is a real home-like feel to visiting the property.Tasting the wine, however, reminds you why you are there. Small batches of amazing wines are produced in a professional manner. I think he said that about 700 cases are made each year -- all in numbered and color-coded bottles with unique names. The wines are available in limited restaurants and resellers, so when at Clos Saron, be sure to stock up. The pinot noir is the specialty, but we truly enjoyed all that we triedCheck out the website, http://www.clossaron.com/, and be sure to call or email in advance to book a visit. If you have time, go visit West Coast Falconry in Marysville, too.
