We just returned from a wonderful weekend ride. We celebrated my daughters 12th birthday. A terrific adventure for a horse loving young lady. We will treasure the memories always!!!! Thank you for a great time on the range :-)
Dedicated people doing marvelous work to rescue wild horses who otherwise would be "culled" by the Bureau of Land Management. They are only open for drop-in visitors on weekend hours, so check ahead or make an appointment. We had a tour with an amazing viewing opportunity of the horses. You can also arrange for riding trips into this vast sanctuary to see the horses.
This was a highlight of our time near Mt. Lassen. If you're in the area and have any interest in animals, the Wild Horse Sanctuary is well worth a visit. We had a chance to see up close several groups of wild horses that had come down from the hills for afternoon feedings. The owner and one of her interns were very generous with their time and answered all our questions about the horses and the excellent work of the sanctuary. They are only open to the public limited hours so check before you go.
What a great place that does such great work. 300 rescued horses, many from BLM land that might otherwise be killed if not given this home. If you love horses, you'll want to stop at this unique place to see the great work that they do. Often times the horses can be observed as they are feeding and it is sight to behold such a large number of horses feeding. They also offer 2 and 3 day trail rides as a fundraiser. A must do!
We showed up even though it wasn't within their "open window" but were escorted around nonetheless by a very knowledgeable apprentice. Great to see the horses and what they are doing there to save and support a dying breed. Visit if you can and contribute to this wonderful cause!
I had read about this place a few years ago in the NY Times travel section and made it a goal to experience this. It was definitely worth it and exceeded all my expectations. The wild horses were amazing, beautiful and in their natural element. We were able to ride 6+ hours per day, which is really a bargain when you consider that some places charge you exorbitant prices just for 1/2 hour ride (I used to take dressage lessons, which definitely takes a bite out of your wallet). You feel great about going on this excursion because your fee actually helps to feed the wild horses. The manager, Diane & her husband (and even their dog Prince) made us feel so welcome and are overall just genuine & lovely people. The trail was a bit rocky, but that was part of the terrain. We rode to their little cabins on the hill and had an amazing dinner. To cap it off, some of Diane's musician friends came by to sing us some country songs on their guitar by the fire pit after dinner--it was pretty spectacular to have a private concert under the stars. I probably took a million photos, but it was because I wanted to remember the place forever. I will definitely return and highly recommend it.
This is a beautiful place to visit. The horses are roaming free and happy and it is like going to a park for the day and viewing wild horses while you picnic. The trail rides are exciting and adventurous but also scenic and you really get up close to the horses in the wild. The burros are adorable as well...can't wait to ride here again!
I had a great time on the 2-day trail ride in October. We saw hundreds of wild horses roaming around at the beginning of our trip and at the end of the trip. One band actually stays close to the cabins so you are able to see them all the time. The owner Diane and her volunteers make you feel very welcome and prepare awesome meals. I can't wait to go back in the Springtime.
This was an awesome experience. The ranch-hands were amazing, the accommodations were comfortable, the views were stunning. You really will be treated like royalty and get some dirt under your nails as well. I will plan to visit again because it was so much fun the first time around. I recommend the three day trail ride simply because you wont want to leave.
Everything I was told & more :-)Truly a life changing experience if you love horses, wildlife and the great outdoors!Highly recommend for anyone looking for outdoors adventure :-)
