We were lucky enough to visit the Heritage Center during the annual Art Fair. Wonderful creativity on display in the beautiful modern gallery. Gift shop is classy. The small permanent museum displays elsewhere in the Center are sobering. Quiet beauty in the cemetery. Felt honored to stand at Red Cloud's grave. Thank you.
If you love art, RCHC is a must see! I loved everything about the Heritage Center. It's on the ground floor, the restrooms are clean, the staff is very friendly, the artwork is beautiful! Be sure to purchase a handmade gift by a local resident.
This is an excellent school and a great resource for the Oglalla Lakota people. An interesting building and a small museum.
We visited here first in 2008 twice and in 2009 came back. I was horrified at the white Jesus; Jesus was brown and the "dominant culture" is no excuse for making him either white or roman catholic. However, the centre itself is wonderful. The art is what I want on my wall! The beading work is unbelievably beautiful - how could any one get that accuracy and symmetry without a pattern? Plus they sell Brule CDs
We stopped here on the way to Wounded Knee. It's mainly crafts for sale and an exhibit of crafts, but I was glad to support this cause in an impoverished area.
Go take a tour of the school, talk to the students, the teachers, and walk around the beautiful property. Go up the hill to Red Cloud's grave. Go into the heritage center in the main red brick building and marvel at the handicrafts of the Lakota, and pick up a book or two or three to increase your knowledge of the Lakota. The handiwork is gorgeous and makes fabulous gifts! As well, the school gives most of the profit on the pieces back to the artists, which is wonderful!
