We go to Mt. Rushmore often really like the breakfast and taking time to walk around the monument and just enjoy the beauty of it and the scenery around the area.
Just that great. If you have not ever taken a trip there.. . worth the trip. New and moder and clean.
This is a must see for every American! One of our very favorite national monuments. Four Presidents faces in stone on the mountain side. Full visitor center, National Park presentations on the history of the monument. Great parking. Might even see some Dahl sheep (wild) near the property!
The view is best in the early morning and NO Pet's allowed. It was Fall when we were there, so the weather's very comfortable. There's a lot of walking, if you so desire, so be ready and bring plenty of water, too.
I was disappointed. Expected ??? The museum was nice. The gift shops over priced as normal. the best thing was getting to see It with snow on the top. that was cool.
It's great to be able to see this monument in person ..there is plenty of viewing areas ..and a path to walk around the back..the restaurant there has good food and ice-cream. There is plenty of parking &..restrooms..this is a great family stop..
try to time your trip & not go during bike week. was crazy. check the weather as if it's cloudy or raining you won't see a thing!
Finally getting to see this was and it didn't disappoint. Staying in deadwood was perfect for visiting it all
I heard about this monument from a campground owner. There is no information about Mt. Roosevelt in the travel brochures. The story is told as follows: Seth Bullock was the first mayor of Deadwood. Seth was very good friends with Teddy Roosevelt. To honor Teddy, he built this monument. Seth knew he would be buried in Mt. Moriah cemetary so he placed Teddy's monument on the top of a mountain which could be viewed from his gravesite at Mt. Moriah. Seth built this as a Friendship Monument to Teddy. To get there, you have to take Mt. Roosevelt Road which runs up the mountain next to The Lodge at Deadwood. It is a well maintained gravel road. You will see rest rooms, a picnic and parking area about 3 1/2 miles up the road. Park there and take either path up to the monument. There are informational signs along the path. When you get to the monument, there is a circular staircase inside you can climb. From the top you can see Orman Dam/Belle Fourche Reservoir, Wyoming, and Montana. It is an easy hike up the mountain. Take one path up and the other down since there are different views. Not many Deadwood natives even know about this attraction. It is well worth the time.
Great stop just outside of Deadwood. The turn is by The Lodge at Deadwood on 85. It starts out tar but turns to gravel when you take the turn to drive up to Mt. Roosevelt. A little curvey in places & bumpy but otherwise was fine getting there. This a must-do esp. in the Fall. The Fall colors were beautiful and views from the tower were amazing. Don't forget to take the little trail down to the wooden lookout deck below the tower. Take the trail that veers off to the right (on way up to tower) for beautiful vista & view of Bear butte. Then take the other way down. So glad we did this while visiting Deadwood!
This is an incredible monument and very well managed. It has to be seen to be believed and is a miracle of our times. Certainly one the best monuments in the world
While in Deadwood, this is a must visit. It's outside of town and you need to climb a gravel rd up Mt. Roosevelt to get to it. (Kind of scary NO guard rails ...but a lovely view.). The hike to the tower was nice, wooded, and there was an interesting boulder field along the way. Once at the tower, you can climb it and enjoy the views. Very glad we went a little out of the way to visit this piece of history.
After seeing Mt. Roosevelt Monument highly rated here I wanted to see it for myself. First off it is very difficult to find! The map on TripAdvisor, as did google maps, showed it in Deadwood, which it is not. Finally after driving around found the sign showing the road to it. I apologize for not remembering road we were on, but I believe it was close to The Lodge Hotel of Deadwood (outskirts of Deadwood). It was a couple mile drive up a windy road, which a good portion of it was gravel. We were on motorcycles so it was slow going but got there fine. You are at the right place when you see a little parking area with a restroom. The trail for the hike up begins there. As others have said it is a short hike, but it's by no means easy. The day I went it was 90 and in jeans/boots so I was breathing plenty hard getting up to the top and I am in pretty good shape, but also didn't waste any time getting up there. It's a cool tower and I love the history of it, being built in 1919. The views are ok, but in my opinion can be seen in other places of the hills just as well. If you are doing the hike in hopes of great views, you might be disappointed. On plus side - it's free.
This is a great place to drive to get a great view of the surrounding area. The road is near the Deadwood Lodge. Drive on a gravel road for about 2 miles and you'll reach the small parking area and the trail head. This is a short, mostly flat, circular trail. You'll have a great view when you reach the monument and another great view as you continue the hike of Bear Butte.
I thought I would be underwhelmed but loved the monument. The lighting ceremony was nicely done and showed respect for veterans. We drove the area and saw "the boys" from several places on the Iron Mountain Road. Really enjoyed this part of our vacation!
