great stopping point for grands with exception of one taking a bite out of a watermelon which we ended up purchasing. Clean and tidy. Across road is a large farm with cows so we got some great photos. Ice cream was great.
We never drive through this area without stopping. They have great peaches throughout the summer, and great treats year round. Our favorite is the warm peach dumpling with peach ice cream, it's delicious. The whole place is very neat and clean. I have found the summer help to be very helpful and friendly, otherwise, I must agree with previous comments. Remember, this is primarily a produce market that sells yummy homemade ice cream and dumplings (similar to cobbler), so it's always worth a stop to see the beautiful produce displays and have a treat.
We ride down here a couple times a year for peaches from Mebane, NC, about an hour and 45 minutes or so. It's close to the NC Zoo, Seagrove Potteries, and the Rankin Museum in Ellerbe, so you can combine trips. In addition to several varieties of fresh peaches, they usually have many other kinds of produce including but not limited to potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, cabbage, beans, etc. Inside they have different types of ciders, peach jelly and preserves, and pickled peaches, plus some different kinds of snacks. You can also purchase peach dumplings, hot and sweet, from the adjoining kitchen, as well as peach, and other flavors of ice cream and shakes. I can personally vouch fro the dumplings and ice cream.... They have rest room facilities, and a picnic area where you can enjoy your ice cream. The facility is fairly new, modern, and clean; this is a pretty upscale farm stand, but it has what you'll be looking for, more than likely. Easy on and off of the highway, and the billboards will tell you where to exit.A word to the wise: First, they don't have fresh peaches all year long. Some people forget it's a seasonal crop.; Second, some varieties of peaches, like apples, are sweeter than others, and they are not always available, depending on the time of the season. If in doubt, ask the folks working there for their opinions, some of the "peachy" ones may not be as sweet as others. Some might also have to sit for a day or so to be ready to eat, but they also usually have some that are a little softer and ready to bite into.So next time you're heading to the beach by way of 220, take time to pull in at Johnson's. You'll probably find a thing or two you can't live without, and, as always, Happy Motoring!
Even if you don't like peaches, there is plenty more here!! We missed the peach ice cream this time which was sad but they close at six on Saturdays. We got here at five minutes til six and they had already cleaned the ice cream side. Picked up several different candies and some peaches. We felt bad because everyone was waiting for us to leave to go home so were rushed just grabbing things. In doing so I did get the wrong peaches, I got the peachier tasting ones instead of the sweeter ones. Glad they are still in business with the highway. They have all kinds of veggies and jams. We will make sure that we get there earlier next time to get ice cream and have more time to pick up goodies.
The peach ice cream with peaches and the peach dumpling was very good, but the fresh peaches that we bought were not very sweet.
We have always stopped for years at Johnson's with no complaints, however will not be back. There was a sweet girl who boxed my peaches and she had no problem with me taking them to the car. There was 3 cars in our party and all were buying various items. My wife was in the bathroom and the guy taking money proceeded to chew my sister in law and daughter in law out as they were paying for their items about my peaches. My wife came out ,paid for our peaches and we were on our way.I never knew about this until later on down the road.I never saw the man, only know he was heavy set.He should train his help instead of chewing out someone else as they are paying. If the girl had said take the peaches to cash register, that would have been ok,but he is not the only one selling peaches and he will never sell me anymore. We always buy a bushel coming and going to beach.3 more cars that stay with us were about 1 hour behind us also commented as to this guy's being rude.If this person is an employee ,I hope the owner reads this,if you are the owner I would suggest you train help instead of running away customers.
Our annual family stop on the way to Myrtle Beach. The best peaches ever! Try the peach ice cream or peach dumpling...wonderful.
My wife and I were on our way from Greenville to Myrtle Beach and saw their billboard and decided to stop. We ended up buying many jars and bottles of jelly, jam, and syrups. Their peach ice cream is very good also. They also have clean rest rooms. We were glad we stopped.
