I love traveling to different historical sites across the U.S. My cousin and I stopped by the site a couple weekends ago. I enjoyed learning about the history of the school and it's founder. She was quite a pioneer of her day. It isn't often you get to learn about Black preparatory schools and Black upper class students back in the days before integration.
Ms. Brown ran the school for Black students, but it is evident looking at the class photos that she herself preferred the lighter-skinned members of her race. A little inside prejudice that isn't often talked about, but definitely exists.
It is sad to say that I believe this is one of the most unadvertised sites to visit. Our church group visited this site and we were surprised at all the history that has not been "spotlighted". I would highly recommend this historic site to everyone to visit, especially african americans. Mrs. Brown was a pillow for the education of many men and women. The site is under much needed construction and needs our support. I highly recommend visiting this historic site and learn about our education history.
Since my last review .. The Owners have made a significant effort to improve the look of the site .. so overlook that (NOW) from the other review :) Everything (on the exterior) looked neat and clean, freshly painted and ready for visitors !!.. by the way ... I did NOT stop except for traffic turning, and this site wouldn't let me post unless I said that I visited... but I felt that my last review needed updating..
Have visited this unique State Historic Site in the past, but had the opportunity to attend a meeting in one of their rental facilities. It was great; meeting in one of the historic structures provides a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. Work is ongoing to modernize the infrastructure while stabilizing and restoring the campus buildings. A hidden gem!
as a historical site it has enough merit to warrant a visit. lately the buildings been looking a bit run down, although they keep the grass mowed nicely. I never see anyone out there.. which is sad.
