I happened upon the Kittrell Confederate Cemetery while driving home after noticing a Civil War Trails sign. The site itself is not well marked after the initial sign, and it was not until I had turned around that I saw the sign to the cemetery. I did not know what the site was until then. You will need to pay attention in order to not miss the right streets. The cemetery itself is located along a semi-paved, dirt road really out of the way of anything else. The cemetery was a hospital during the American Civil War for Confederate soldiers injured during the siege of Petersburg, VA. Approximately 50 soldiers are buried close to where the hospital was located. The site was chosen due to its proximity to the railroad (still present) and the ease to get injured away from the front lines. The hospital itself was actually a converted hotel. The cemetery is small and it will not take long to visit. There is an interpretive sign that describes the site. A flagpole with a Confederate flag sits in the center of the cemetery. The 52 graves are arrayed in neat rows with the names and units of the deceased. There are also four graves of unknown soldiers. If you happen to be driving along HWY 1 and are interested in civil war history, the Kittrell Confederate Cemetery would be worth visiting. I was glad to have noticed the sign and decided to stop. They could do a better job with providing directions to the site, otherwise there were no issues as far as being able to find a spot to pull of and park.
