I was born and raised in Lexington and have seen this old courthouse so many times I can't count. My fiancé and I went in after the last renovation was finished. It was CLEARLY a structural and exterior cosmetic reno because the inside was UNCHANGED! The inside, while mild intriguing, is just like the city itself, stuck in the past, preserving things that most people really could care less about.Sad.
This Courthouse has been closed for over a year due to remodeling but is almost ready for it's grand re-opening. The second floor is still that of the old courthouse including the old jail cell. I can't wait to see what has been done to the ground floor, the exterior is once again beautiful.
Even though this building is undergoing exterior renovation it is well worth the visit. Inside you will to see some of the collection on the first level and the old courtroom on the second floor. If I lived in this area I would recruit retired lawyers to volunteer here. What a wonderful piece of small town history. Lexington like many other NC towns grew up around a mill. A layout of the mill town's "model' city can be seen on the first floor. I do hope Lexington will continue to embrace it's history and share it with other travelers. I did miss all the painted pigs I saw on my first visit. Perhaps a change from fiberglass to cement would help the pigs stay in place and detour any wandering off on their part. Did I mention the shopping on main street? We were traveling on a motor coach and visited every shop and a few restaurants too.
