Porter's home has been restored to look nearly exact to the way she designed it complete with a conservatory for plants to the typewriter in the front room where she used to write her books. The visitor center looks different from the log cabin where Porter lived with her family but it is a nice place to hold meetings and presentations about Porter's work as a naturalist. Recommended for school outings, ladies groups, etc.

Enjoyable tour with knowledgable tour guide. Some rooms are under repair, but even those had interesting stories. The new visitors center was very nice with a sitting room for watching the birds.

My Mother loved Gene Stratton Porter as a girl and got me reading Freckles and so on. One Winter we stopped by and I was sad to learn that the wetlands had long ago been drained and planted in corn.But now some of the wetlands are being restored. The Historical Side is gussied up. The birds are singing as always but I'm sure they are enjoying the restored wildlands. Gread walking and enjoying if you loved Stratton's books.

Those who loved reading A Girl of the Limberlost and Freckles will put themselves in the main characters' shoes as they knock on the doors of the Bird Lady's house. Our outstanding tour guide, Randy, brought it all to life as we went from room to room, marveling at Gene's extraordinary feats as a naturalist/photographer and book author. A brand new visitor center next door has a terrific gift shop and clean bathrooms. Be sure to visit the marshlands that Porter wrote about, being restored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Friends of the Limberlost after once having been drained and converted to agricultural fields.

The first floor restoration is very impressive. Our guide gave a thorough and very interesting history of the site and family who built it. A drive or walk through downtown Geneva a couple blocks away is interesting as well. 1 hour total.

They recently built a nice visitors center with VERY helpful people manning it! My husband & I were looking for hiking trails in the Limberlost & we found out that there aren't any. There ARE hiking trails in the Loblolly swamp which is nearby & we took those. There are 2 on either side of the parking area. The 1st is short, but nice - many different kinds of birds can be seen. The 2nd is much longer, going from the open swampy area to a wooded area. There's a small pond near the wooded area as well. The mosquitos were bad in the woods. There are deer flies everywhere. Spray yourself before hiking. You can also take a tour of the house & grounds of Gene Stratton-Porter, but we passed on it.

Limberlost is the home that several of the books by Gene Stratton-Porter are based in. A beautiful place to see and the guide was interesting and very knowledgeable. He gave a very interactive tour and we learned a lot about this area of Indiana we didn't know. I'm going home to read at least one of the books by Stratton-Porter.

A two hour drive from Indianapolis the Limberlost State Historic Site is well worth the trip. My Indiana State Museum membership got me in to see Gene Stratton-Porter's home - a beautiful rustic log cabin exterior with cozy Arts and Crafts / Victorian interior. The folks at the visitor's center were very friendly and informative, and the property was full of the flaura and fauna that Gene, the naturalist, would have captured in celluloid. Bluebells, tulips, redbuds and all of the colors of Spring.If you're looking for the perfect place to run away to and find yourself regrouping I highly recommend it!
