I LOVE taking small side highways and roads on a road trip. I never go back the same way I came when going on a road trip. I like to drive down the old main street of small towns and look at architecture, old movie theaters and stores. Heading westbound on highway 96 in Kansas, the sign just east of Ness City advertises to not miss the "Skyscraper of the Plains" in Ness City! OK...I'm a sucker for that kind of advertising and am always up for an interesting site, a historic landmark or something different. It's just one block north of the highway so it only takes a minute to drive to. Although I wouldn't exactly call it a skyscraper, the Ness County Bank Building that was build in 1885 is an impressive and beautiful building that is taller than any of the other businesses in that small town. I loved the architectural style of the building and the huge carved stone blocks that the building was constructed from. We didn't go in the building, just stopped briefly to look at it and were back on the road again.
Nice stop that houses the local museum. This building is chock full of architectural design. Local history is interesting.
