worst place ever!!! This was a girls weekend out we rented the Marcus house when we arrived the yard was a mess. Opened the door and the stench was enough to gag you. There was huge stains on the floors, mouse droppings every where even in the beds. This house had a pool table and ping pong table in the basement which was full of mold. Had an old hot tub out back used as a dumpster. We girls have named this house the murder house and needless to say we did not stay there. When we complained they said house keeping must not have come yet. We told the owner at Akers ferry that we wanted a full refund,he was very rude but we did get our money.Next day when we went to get our canoe rental he was still very rude. There are a lot of canoe rental places on the current river use any of them but I'ld say clear of Akers Ferry. But on a good note WE love the Current River and found a nice CLEAN place to stay I think the name was Bartons it was by Jadwins Canoe rental on Hwy K.
We just left our rental house at Aker's Ferry early this morning. We were awoken early in the morning by a rat in our bed. No, not a large mouse, a large RAT in our bed. Needless to say, we were all up and packed in no time. As we were packing, my friend opened one of the bathroom cabinets and found "Bar bait" which my friend, who lives on a farm, recognized as rat killer farmers put in their barns. We waited until the office opened to complain to the owner, who was not surprised at all about the rat. He said "Mam this is the country- there's even rats in this building" (indicating his store.) I said "you rented us a place you knew had rats in it?!" Then he basically laughed at us and told us he was not refunding our money.
We have visited Current River the past two 4th of July's. Both times, we canoed from Baptist Camp to Akers Ferry day one, then Akers to Round Spring day 2. It's a total of 36 miles. The river is absolutely beautiful and serene. This canoe trip is fine for a novice but it would be helpful to be with an experienced person because some places do get dicey. There are usually a lot of friendly people relaxing on the river in kayaks, tubes, floats and canoes. There are plenty of spots to pull off, too. I would shorten day 2 though, only because it is a bit exhausting. As for rentals, do not use Akers Ferry. The first year, we had a leaky metal canoe. The second year was fine except we rented a cabin from them. It was the most disgusting place I have every stayed. There was blood on the pillowcase, mold in the shower, the hot water heater broke and it was infested with flies. When I complained, I was treated like garbage. I complained again, to someone else, and checked out early. We were able to get one evening refunded. When we checked in at a hotel, they guessed we had stayed at Akers and said "we hear this all of the time."
Canoeing or kayaking on the Current River is a wonderful experience. We've used many rental companies for our kayaks and canoes but recommend Harvey's Alley Spring Canoe Rental. The river is absolutely pristine, please keep it that way if you visit. It is quiet, never populated like the other rivers and a joy for nature lovers capable of the 11 to 15 mile floats. The river is swift but very safe for anyone who can swim. I've never seen anyone tip and there aren't the types of rapids or white water that would cause you to do so. It takes all day and the spring fed river is always nice and cold. Setting in in the mornings can be chilly but if you go on a hot day you won't notice the heat being so close to all the cool water. If you are luck you may see the wild horses as we did. We've done this float four times and saw the herd of wild horses on one occasion drinking from the side of the river. See attached photographs.I strongly encourage anyone of reasonable physical condition to enjoy this beautiful river. Children supervised by adults and wearing life jackets would also be fine. Rafts, Canoes or Kayaks are available and the rental rates are very reasonable. If you are looking for a place to be loud and for heavy drinking this would not be recommended. If you are drunk they can pull you out of the river, likewise if you litter(at all). The river is very clean and the rental companies provide you bags for your trash so keep it with you and you can dispose of it and the end of your float.
this part of current river is a beautiful place. It is a great place to go tubing and canoeing or kayaking. There's a lot of great thanks to see natura springs and such. But do not use Akers fairy rentals under no circumstances did you ever use them....you will get treated like garbage and treated like you don't belong and over charged for wore out tubes with leaks. And will not come in air you up if you go flat. I would suggest jadwin or any of the other rental places youll be better off. Jadwin actually aired up our tubes for us. when you go there and people ask where did you rent from... you say aker... they say hey you shouldn't have done that...they are terrible!
Perfectly good experience -- used their services for a 4-hr afternoon trip down the river from Cedars Grove to Akers Ferry. Driver dropping us off at Cedars Grove was personable and gave good, basic advice for navigating the standard things you have to deal with in riding in a canoe down this river. The Current River is just about perfect for a beautiful afternoon's cruise with a certain minimal amount of challenge for newbie canoers -- enough to make you pay attention, learn basic skills, and deal with mild rapids, boulders, and trees hanging out from the shorelines, but not enough to really scare you or risk your life. You'll be tired and feel grubby by the end of the ride -- but will feel absolutely fantastic after a hot shower, change of clothes, and dinner ashore somewhere nearby -- you've just spent one of the most worthwhile afternoons of your life cruising down the Current River.
Don't use Akers Ferry Canoe Rental for your rentals, They are rude and have crap that they rent.. Current River is a great place enjoy it, Don't use this rental place or you will regret it.. They will tell you, Oh well that the way of the river, Yeah well when you spend, good money you expect good service we had a very bad experience, they don't care if their customers even get off the river okay...Poor just poor business.. I will not recommend them to any one.. Just bad. We had tubes go flat, and another group had a canoe start leaking water, no refund. Just bad business..
