This may be a nice historic place but, no parking, was closed, and difficult to find. We drove past it and saw it. It looked well maintained. I can saw I saw a grist mill.
A short way out of town, and on its original plot, the Old Town Mill is unexpectedly surrounded by highways (it sits almost under I-95). The historic building and the mill wheel have been beautifully preserved, and the grounds are well maintained (there are several picnic tables on the lawn). The building wasn’t open when we were there (this has to be arranged by appointment), however the grounds were open. A special place that is worth visiting.
A good opportunity to see the mix between a historic place and the big highways on USA. A small house surround by big highways. The place doesn't have a visit schedule, we only see it outside. It was closed on a Saturday by noon. that a shame.
The mill was originally built in 1650 and was rebuilt right after being burned down during the Revolutionary War. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, under the name Winthrop Mill. The building was closed when we visited, but the grounds were open. We read the historic marker on the building and roamed around a little. The fall colors were almost at their peak, and the mill provided an excellent setting for getting some fall pictures. The mill is located almost directly under the Gold Star Memorial Bridge which takes I-95 over the Thames River. It’s wonderful that the mill never had to be moved from its original location, unlike so many other historic buildings. It’s an example of how historic preservation and progress do not necessarily need to be at odds with each other.
